Early life and education

Robert was raised alongside his three siblings in Virginia by their mother Anne-Dillon D. Costa who is a lawyer, and their father Thomas E. Costa who is also a lawyer, as well representing the Bristol-Myers Squibb pharmaceutical company.

Robert spendt his first two years in Richmond, then the family moved to Lower Makefield Township in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where he attended elementary school, and became interested in playing football, but dreaming about becoming a famous actor. He then went to Pennsbury High School in 2000, where he excelled in several subjects including sports, which led to him being  profiled in the book “Wonderland: A Year in the Life of an American High School” by Michael Bamberger, who is best known for being a writer for the magazine “Sports Illustrated”. During those years, Robert became close friends with Zach Woods, who is today a famous actor and comedian, and Hallie Jackson who is a journalist.

He became interested in journalism during his third year at Pennsbury, and also talk several musicians and bands into coming to perform there, such as John Mayer and Maroon 5, while he was also working for the magazine “The Bucks County Courier Times” as their interviewer of bands and musicians, as well as reviewer of concerts; he occasionally appeared on the PHS-TV network. Robert continued his education at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in American studies in 2008, and then continued his education at Cambridge University in the UK, graduating with a Master’s degree in politics in 2009. While in the UK, he was a member of the debating society The Cambridge Union.

He subsequently served on the Notre Dame’s board of trustees between 2014 and 2017.

Career as a journalist

Robert launched his career while studying at Notre Dame, working for the PBS’ show “Charlie Rose”, ABC’s show “This Week with George Stephanopoulos”, and was reporting on politics from the House of Commons in the U. He had his own show “Office Hours” which aired on ND-TV, and in which he was seen interviewing people on the campus.

Upon graduation, he started working at the business-focused international daily newspaper “The Wall Street Journal” as a fellow, but in less than a year, he switched to the magazine “National Review” when offered a position of a reporter.

After two years, Robert was promoted to Washington editor, and was simultaneously contributing to several TV networks such as CNBC and MSNBC among others. He gained recognition in 2013 when he reported on the Republican Party in Congress during the US federal government shutdown from 1 October to 17 October, and many magazines wrote about him, such as “The New Republic” and “New York”.

He left his job at “National Review” in November 2013, and became a reporter for “The Washington Post” in January 2014 and two years later in December 2015, he became a political analyst for the NBC and MSNBC TV networks, and has since interviewed the current President of the US Donald Trump on several occasions.

After the death of Gwen Ifill who was the moderator of the “Washington Week” show airing on the PBS network, in April 2017 Robert was invited to take her place. Robert is also currently working for the Donald R. Keough School of Global Affairs, as a member of their advisory council.

Love life and relationships

Robert is keeping details of his love life to himself, but there are rumors circulating the internet that the popular journalist might be gay due to the very fact that he hasn’t talked about any women he might have dated.
