Born Ronald Joseph Livingston on the 5th June 1967, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa USA, he is the son of Kurt Livingston, who is an aerospace/electronics engineer, and his wife Linda (nee Rinas), who is a Lutheran pastor. He is of part German, Welsh, English and Scottish ancestry, and one of four siblings, including a younger brother John, an actor as well, and a sister Jennifer Livingston, who is a news reporter currently working at WKBT in Wisconsin.

Ron went to Marion High School, and after matriculation enrolled at Yale University, where among his colleagues were future actor/producer Paul Giamatti and future actor Edward Norton. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Studies and English Literature.

Ron’s career started while he was still at the university; he secured his first roles at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, and later with Manhattan Class Company. Upon graduating from Yale, he moved to Chicago, where he continued with a career on stage, making a name for himself at the Goodman Theatre and other venues.
