Sean Patrick Thomas was born on the 17th December 1970, in Washington, D.C. USA; he is the son of Carlton Thomas, who is an engineer and worked for DuPont, and his wife Cheryl, who was a financial analyst, also working for DuPont. Both of his parents are Guyanese emigrants, and settled in Wilmington, Delaware upon Sean’s birth.
He is the oldest of three children and went to Brandywine High School in Delaware. After matriculation, he enrolled at the University of Virginia, wanting to study law, but as soon as he got the role in the film “A Raising in the Sun”, Sean decided for acting, and transferred to New York University, where he attended the prestigious Graduate Acting Program at the Tisch School of the Arts. He graduated in 1995, obtaining a Master of Fine Arts degree, having previously obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia.
Career Beginnings
Sean’s career started in the mid-‘90s with minor roles in such TV series as “One Life to Live” (1995), and “New York Undercover” (1996).
After these he switched to roles in films, appearing in the award-winning action drama film “Courage Under Fire” (1996), starring Denzel Washington, Meg Ryan and Lou Diamond Phillips, then in 1997 he featured in another successful film, the action thriller “Conspiracy Theory”, with Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts and Patrick Stewart as the stars of the film. Sean has been married to actress Aonika Laurent since 2006; the couple met for the first time at a party which was organized by Tim Story, the director of “Barbershop”. They started dating and planned their wedding for the 5th of November 2005, however, it was postponed due to Hurricane Katrina, so they eventually exchanged their vows on the 22nd of April 2006.
Since then, they have welcomed two children, daughter Lola Jolie in 2008, and son Luc Laurent born in 2010.
