Afton Smith is an American actress and writer, born on 3 December 1967, in Northport, Long Island, New York USA. She’s also known for being actor Brendan Fraser’s former wife. Afton also has several minor roles in movies to her credit, such as “George of the Jungle” and “A Reason to Believe”.

Early Life

There’s not much information about Afton Smith’s early life, family and education, but it’s known that she matriculated from Upper Canada School. As she grew up in New York, she started becoming interested in acting.

Actress

Afton Smith’s career as an actress was very brief, and it included several minor roles in films.

Afton made her acting debut in 1987 as Kim in the movie “Less Than Zero” – the drama and crime film was centered on Clay, a college freshman who returns to Los Angeles when his ex-girlfriend requests it. However, he discovers soon that his best friend has become a drug addict. The movie included actors such as Andrew McCarthy, Jami Gertz, Robert Downey Jr. and James Spader. The movie’s budget was not high, and it didn’t receive warm reviews.

Afton’s second role was in 1987, playing a minor character in the comedic TV-Movie “Once Again”, focused on Aging Rocker, a young man who visits his father in New Jersey on his wedding day, but a sudden event shocks him deeply. The movie didn’t receive good critiques.

Four years passed before Afton could land another role, this time in the movie “Pyrates”, centered on the passionate relationship of Ari and Sam. The comedy was released on 5 March 1992.

In 1991 Afton also played the role of Leona Threadgoode in the movie “Fried Green Tomatoes”, starring Kathy Bates and Mary Stuart Masterson. The movie centers on Evelyn Couch, an unhappy housewife who one day goes to a nursing home to visit some of her relatives. In this place she meets Ninny Threadgoode, who shares with Evelyn the story of a young woman named Idgie Threadgoode – the women end up developing a friendship through it. The movie had a low budget, but had a good reception commercially.

After that movie, another three years would pass for Afton to land another role. In 1994 she played Janine in “Reality Bites”, a comedy and drama film starrring Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke and Ben Stiller. The movie tells the story of Lelaina Pierce, who is a filmmaker trying to survive life after college. The reviews about the movie weren’t kind towards it, and it wasn’t a very commercially successful film.

In 1995, Afton landed her first and only role on TV, in the series entitled “Pig Sty”, playing the role of Great Looking Woman. The same year she was cast as Becky in the movie “A Reason to Believe”. The film centered on Charlotte, a popular college student who suffers a sexual assault after a party.

Charlotte confesses what happened to people close to her, however the perpetrator Jim Curran denies that what happened was to be considered rape. The whole situation strengthens and weakens some of the relationships and friendships on the campus. The movie starred by Alison Smith and Jay Underworld, and received mixed critiques.

Afton’s last role in a movie came when she was cast as one of Ursula’s friends in Disney’s movie “George of the Jungle”. Brendan Fraser and Leslie Mann were the protagonists of the movie, playing the characters of George and Ursula respectively. The movie received mixed critiques, but it was highly successful at the box office.

Afton met Brendan on 4 July 1993, during a barbeque at Winona Ryder’s house; it’s said that they fell in love immediately. In 1996 Fraser proposed to Afton in Paris, and two years later they married in 1998. The marriage’s first child came in 2002, a son they named Griffin Arthur Fraser. They welcomed their second son in 2004, whose name is Holden Fletcher Fraser. The third and last son the couple had together was Leland Francis Fraser, born in 2006.

Despite the long time together and after becoming parents, the relationship between them started deteriorating, and in 2007 the couple announced their separation. It was agreed that Fraser had to pay alimony to Afton of $900,000 annually. However, in 2013 Fraser petitioned to the court to reduce his alimony, claiming that he didn’t earn enough money to afford it. His second role and his film debut would come in 1991, in the film “Dogfight”. His first lead role would come only a year later, in the movie “Encino Man”, in which he played the role of a caveman. Also in 1992, he starred along with Chris O’Donnell and Matt Damon in the film “School Ties”.

Other roles would come for him in 1994, with his character Steve Nebraska in the film “The Scout”, and as the character of Montgomery “Monty” Kessler in “With Honors”. The same year he played the role of Chester Ogilvie in the comedy movie “Airheads”, in which he co-starred with Adam Sandler and Steve Buscemi.

In 1999 he starred the highly successful movie “The Mummy”, alongside Rachel Weisz, in which Brendan played the role of Rick O’Connell, an American adventurer. The movie was so successful that in 2001 the sequel “The Mummy Returns” was released, and in 2008 the third part entitled “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” was released – the three films were all highly successful at the box office.

Another successful film in which Fraser appeared was the Academy Award Winner “Crash” in 2004. In 2007 he starred in the movies “Journey to the Center of the Earth” and “Inkheart”. He joined the cast of the series “The Affair” in 2016.

Despite Fraser’s success in movies during the 1990s and early 2000s, he didn’t receive many job offers during the 2010s, which he blames on accusations of sexual assault against Philip Berk. Besides this, he experienced several medical problems, which resulted in him getting a knee replacement, and having vocal chord surgery.
