Childhood and education
Bo was raised an only child in Yardley by his father who was a firefighter, and his mother who worked as a cashier at a local supermarket.
Bo expressed his desire for becoming an actor while attending elementary school, but his parents urged him to focus on his education and obtain a degree.

He became physically active while attending high school, as he played football and basketball and also appeared in several plays performed at school. Bo matriculated in 1969, and then enrolled at the University of Arizona’s College of Architecture, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1973.
Acting and directing
He made his directing debut in 2000, when he directed the episode “Fail-Safe” of the action thriller series “Secret Agent Man”, and the following year saw him direct two episodes “The Big Leagues” and “Arthur Needs Space” of the action science fiction comedy series “The Tick”.
He also directed the family adventure comedy movie “The Cat in the Hat” in 2003, but which received mostly negative reviews, and between 2017 and 2019, Bo directed five episodes of the adventure comedy drama “A Series of Unfortunate Events”.
He has acted in only three films – he made an uncredited appearance in the critically acclaimed action adventure comedy “Men in Black II” in 2002, as well as in “Men in Black 3” in 2012. In 2015, he portrayed The Father in the short comedy film “Tiebreaker”, starring Phil Eastman and which follows a father and son who are playing tennis together.
Career as a production designer
Bo worked on his first film “Heart of Steel” in 1983, and three years later on the romantic drama “Violets Are Blue”, which starred Sissy Spacek, Kevin Kline and Bonnie Bedelia, and which is about a young love which could either remain ignited or become doused.
A few of his following works were on the crime film “Stark: Mirror Image” and the thriller drama “Slow Burn” both in 1986, as well and the horror comedy “The Lost Boys” in 1987, while he gained recognition in 1988 when he worked on the critically acclaimed fantasy comedy movie “Beetlejuice”, directed by Tim Burton, and which starred Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis and Michael Keaton – the film follows a spirit who is trying to make people who have just moved into his house go away.

The year 2000 saw Bo work on the science fiction comedy film “What Planet Are You From?”, and he then served as the production assistant of his first TV series – the pilot episode of the science fiction action comedy “The Tick”. Three of his most recent works as a production designer have been on the action fantasy adventure movie “Thor” in 2011, the action adventure comedy “Men in Black 3” in 2013, and 25 episodes of “A Series of Unfortunate Events” between 2017 and 2019.
Awards
In 1985, Bo was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Production Design for the coming-of-age period drama movie “The Color Purple”, and in 1990 he won a BAFTA for Best Production Design for “Edward Scissorhands”.
The year 1992 saw him become nominated for an Awards Circuit Community Award for Best Production Design for “Batman Returns”.
In 1995, he was nominated for both an Academy Award for Best Production Design and an Awards Circuit Community Award for Best Art Direction for “A Little Princess”, and a year later Bo won a Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Production Design, and was nominated for three other awards for “The Birdcage”. Bo met the famous actress Catherine O’Hara in 1988, while they were both working on the movie “Beetlejuice”; it was the film director Tim Burton who encouraged Bo to ask Catherine to go out on a date with him. Her acting career was launched in 1974 when she joined the improvisational comedy enterprise The Second City, and two years later she became a regular in their comedy sketch program “SCTV”. After gaining recognition, Catherine was invited to voice characters in many cartoons –one of her first roles in movies was in “The Rimshots”, which failed to attract much attention, but she went on to star in the Canadian children’s sitcom “Coming Up Rosie” in 1977, and then guest starred in single episodes of many series, such as the horror anthology “Tales from the Crypt”, the science fiction series “The Outer Limits”, and the comedy “Dream On”.
She played a supporting character in Martin Scorsese’s black comedy movie “After Hours” in 1985 as well as in the 1986 romantic comedy movie “Heartburn”, which starred Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson. In 1990, she appeared in the blockbuster movie “Home Alone”, and reprised her role in “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” in 1992.
