Although Susie Hariet is a professional actress and singer, her husband has undoubtedly achieved bigger success in his career. Daniel Jonathan ‘Dan’ Stevens was born in Croydon, south of London, England. As both of his parents are teachers, he grew up in an educational-oriented environment. He attended the independent Kent-based school Tonbridge, where he became interested in acting, and started auditioning for various plays.
At 15 years of age he auditioned to appear in his school’s production of the classical Shakespearean tragedy “Macbeth”.
Despite his teachers’ judgement – they thought he was auditioning for a minor role – Dan was finally cast in the lead role, and starting what would become a promising career as an actor, by subsequently joining the National Youth Theatre: ‘In the oddness of the public school system, English and drama were my salvation’, he told TES Magazine. Other plays he acted in during his school years were “Henry IV, Part I” and “Murder in the Cathedral”.
After his high school matriculation, and as per his school’s drama teacher Jonathan Smith’s suggestion, Dan attended Emmanuel College, Cambridge where he majored in English Literature. During his university years, Dan Stevens joined the famous Dramatic Club Footlights and the theater club The Marlowe Society, with which, for the second time in his young career, he acted in the leading role of “Macbeth”.
Thanks to his role in this play, Dan caught the attention of Peter Hall, who invited him to join the cast of Shakespeare’s comedy “As You Like It”. This marked the start of Dan’s professional career as an actor, allowing him to perform in several theaters in the UK and the US.
In 2006, Dan made his TV debut in “The Line of Beauty”, and besides then playing the role of Lord Holmwood in BBC’s “Dracula”, Stevens also appeared in the network’s adaptation of the classic novel “Sense & Sensibility” by Jane Austen. He continued playing several roles on TV, until his big break in 2010 when he was cast to appear in “Downton Abbey”. His role as Matthew Crawley in this Emmy-nominated series brought Dan Stevens immeasurable fame, undoubtedly setting his path as a promising star.
Regardless of the success of the series, Stevens decided to leave “Downton Abbey” in 2012: ‘It was a bit of a shock for everybody’. He confessed to Buffalo News that the period after his exit from the series was full of uncertainty, not only professionally but also on a personal level -‘My wife was pregnant with our second child, and I didn’t know what was going to happen’.
Fortunately for him he found new professional opportunities after moving to New York, US. He debuted on Broadway in the cast of “The Heiress”, and made several memorable appearances on TV, and in independent films such as “The Guest” in 2014.
Steven was cast as David Charles Haller in the TV series “Legion” in 2017, though his most memorable role to date has been as The Beast in Disney’s live-action movie “Beauty and the Beast”, co-starring Emma Watson. Stevens has also appeared in the movies “Marshall”, “Apostle” and “Lucy in the Sky”.
