Early life and education

Susan was raised alongside her older sister in both New Jersey and New Hampshire, by their father who was a painter and their mother who was working at a local company as a secretary.

She grew up being interested in arts, and also while attending a public high school in New Hampshire, she became interested in acting and creative writing, and was physically active playing a variety of sports such as soccer and volleyball. Susan was painting in her spare time, and then after receiving her first camera, she became interested in photography.

Upon matriculation in 1976, she enrolled at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1980.
