Childhood and education

Robert was raised alongside his sister Lucy and his brother Timothy in the UK by Stephen and their mother Jane Wilde Hawking, who is probably best known for publishing her memoirs “Traveling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen” – the critically acclaimed film “The Theory of Everything” was closely based on the book.

Lucy has become a journalist and a writer, and is known for her children’s book “George’s Secret Key to the Universe”, while Timothy is a professor of Spanish language.

Robert studied at a public high school, and he grew up being interested in computers. Upon matriculation in 1985, he enrolled at Oxford University, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree while he obtained his Master of Arts degree in natural sciences from the University of Cambridge in 1989. Shortly after that, he enrolled at the University of Strathclyde, and graduated with a Master of Science degree in business information technology systems in 1991.

Robert’s career

Robert then launched his career, starting as a programmer at Colin Ross Malone in Glasgow, and is credited with developing the spreadsheet program Schema 2. Since November 1994, he has been working at Microsoft as their Principal Software Engineer, for which job he had to move to Seattle, in Washington State USA, where he has been living for the past 16 years.

Family, love life and relationships

Robert met his wife while the two were attending Oxford University, and they started dating during their junior year. They waited until Robert finished working on his education in 1991 to marry, in a rather small and private ceremony with only their closest friends and family attending.

Sometime in the late ‘90s, his wife gave birth to their son while their daughter followed shortly after. Robert and his wife are currently living in Seattle – both of their children have already moved out.

Robert is a huge fan of Formula One, and has watched many races live, always cheering for the Ferrari tea – he was a huge fan of Michael Schumacher, and became less interested after Michael suffered an accident and could no longer race.

Robert grew up being interested in travelling, and his father’s wealth made it possible for him to travel all around Europe, visiting countries such as Germany, Spain, and Italy while he also had an opportunity to visit several states in the US such as New York, Arizona and Texas among others. However, as his father’s condition worsened, he had to stay at home and help his mother and siblings. Stephen William Hawking was born in Oxford, England on 8 January 1942 – his zodiac sign was Capricorn and he held British nationality. Stephen was working at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge before he passed away, while he also taught mathematics at the same university from 1979 to 2009.

Stephen was raised alongside his two sisters, Philippa and Mary, and their adopted brother Edward Frank David in Oxford, by their father Frank and their mother Isobel Eileen Hawking. Stephen’s paternal great-grandfather was a wealthy man, but who made a mistake by purchasing a huge farm which led to the family’s bankruptcy, saved by Stephen’s great-grandmother when she made a school of their house.

Both of Stephen’s parents had degrees from the University of Oxford, Frank working as a medical researcher while Isobel was a secretary at a medical research institute. Stephen attended the Byron House School in London before switching to St Albans High School for Girls when he was eight years old – it was allowed at that time for younger boys to live in one of the girl’s houses. He went on to study at St Albans School – in 1958, he and some of his friends built a computer from parts of clocks, old telephones, and other components. In March 1959, Stephen received a scholarship from University College, Oxford where he studied physics and chemistry, then continued his education at Trinity Hall, Cambridge in 1962, where he studied cosmology.

It was while attending Trinity Hall, Cambridge that Stephen found out he was suffering from motor neurone disease which led to him becoming depressed. After learning he had more than two years to live which was the contrary of what his doctors told him, he focused on studying once again, and eventually obtained his PhD in applied mathematics and theoretical physics. After he launched his career in 1970, he became focused on researching black holes, and his essay “Black Holes” won him a Gravity Research Foundation Award in 1971 and two years later, Stephen published his book “The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time”. He eventually showed that black holes emit radiation, today known as Hawking radiation.

Stephen went on to focus on quantum mechanics which he believed could answer many questions about black holes, and co-wrote a book about Euclidean quantum gravity in 1993. In 2001, he published his book “The Universe in a Nutshell”, followed by “A Briefer History of Time” in 2005, while his book “God Created the Integers” was finished in 2006. The year 2007 saw Stephen and his daughter Lucy publish the book “George’s Secret Key to the University”, and they subsequently wrote and published sequels in 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2016.

In 1995, Stephen divorced Robert’s mother Jane, and married his nurse Elaine Mason in September 1995, but the two divorced in 2006 and Stephen became closer once again to Jane and his children. He died at his home in Cambridge on 14 March 2018 –  his family stated in an interview that he ‘died peacefully.’
