Life and Career

Amanda Levy was raised in Jamaica, and as such she grew up in the country’s culture. She loved the local music scene there, and it was that involvement which eventually led her to meet TobyMac. They married in 1994, and she later moved with him to the US, making regular visits to Jamaica when they can.

She has mainly been behind the scenes, supporting her husband’s work and at times joining him during big events or concerts. When they started a family, she began to focus more on raising children – they had five, two of whom are twins.

Their eldest followed in his father’s footsteps and a lot of songs were dedicated to him, as he even collaborated with his father numerous times. However, in 2020 it was reported that he had passed away following an accidental overdose. The family has remained silent with their grief with the father only releasing music as a tribute to his late child.

Growing up, TobyMac became interested in a music career, and hoped to make it big as an artist. He grew up in a Christian upbringing, which would be a large influence on his success.

While a student of the private Christian Liberty University, he met and befriended Michael Tait, and the two would launch the group DC Talk, releasing music as a group which included Kevin Max Smith. In 1989, they released their debut album, and continued on with more music, which found a bit of popularity.

After their record “Free at Last”, they began gaining mainstream attention, and were being featured on television. In 1995 the group then released “Jesus Freak”, which was highly successful, being certified multi-platinum. They went on a World Tour to promote their music, and continued to perform as DC Talk until 1996 when they released their final platinum-certified album “Supernatural”.

With a desire to pursue other projects, the group disbanded and embarked on their respective solo careers. The group has reunited several times over many years, and has guested on each other works, remaining close despite being long apart.

Solo Career – TobyMac

Like the rest of DC Talk’s members, Toby had a lot of attention surrounding him when he embarked on a solo career in 2001, releasing his debut solo album “Momentum” which reached the top of the Billboard Heatseekers chart. He began performing and touring as a solo artist, leading to his second release – “Welcome to Diverse City”.

His songs were featured in several films and television shows, such as “Prison Break” and “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift”, and he also contributed music for various programs and companies, including World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), the National Football League (NFL) and the National Basketball Association (NBA).

In 2007 he released his third solo album, “Portable Sounds” which debuted in 10th spot of the Billboard 200, and which was nominated for a Grammy, and won several awards during the GMA Dove Awards.

His song “Feelin’ So Fly” was featured in “The Game Plan” and he also wrote a song for “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe”. The following year he released his first live album “Alive and Transported”, which won him a Grammy Award. Some of his latest releases include “Eye on It”, “This is Not a Test” and “The Elements’”.

The Success of TobyMac

TobyMac is credited with a very successful music career, both with DC Talk and as a solo artist. He’s won seven Grammy Awards during his career, and sold over 10 million albums.

He is one of the top-charting artists on Billboard’s Christian Songs chart, and is also the third Christian artist to debut in the top spot of the Billboard 200 with his album “Eye On It” which also won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album.

Aside from music, he’s also written and released several books in collaboration with DC Talk members, two of which are “Jesus Freaks: Revolutionaries: Stories of Revolutionaries Who Changed Their World: Fearing GOD, Not Man”, and “Jesus Freaks: DC Talk and The Voice the Martyrs – Stories of Those Who Stood for Jesus, the Ultimate Jesus Freaks”. He’s also written books solo, mostly talking about the Christian faith and living a better life as a Christian, especially when it comes to treating those of other faiths.

He is one of the founders of Camp Electric, which aims to help young musicians aspiring to start their journey in the profession.

Personal Life

Amanda Levy met TobyMac in Jamaica in the early-1990s, as Toby frequently visited the country. The two often spend time in Jamaica as her husband also loves the culture there. They had five children, with one having passed away, and one of their twins suffering from muscular dystrophy, a disease which is typified by gradual weakening of the muscles connected to the bones. The family also owns a pet dog. She prefers to keep away from the media, focusing more on the family and supporting them from behind the scenes.
