During his 1992-93 season, he made 8 appearances for the club, scoring once in all the competitions. He also cultivated a reputation for his focus on promoting youth players. He departed Mainz in 2014 as a result of financial disputes, and in 2015, was appointed at fellow Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund, where he won the DFB-Pokal before being dismissed in 2017. In 2018, he was hired by French club Paris Saint-Germain where he won two league titles, including a domestic quadruple in his second season, and guided the club to its first UEFA Champions League final. - On 19 April 2015, he was appointed as the new head coach for Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund, returning to the game after over a year out of management, signing a three-year deal. He finished second in the Bundesliga in his first season, which was a solid achievement given that he had to rouse a team that had finished seventh the season before and was reeling from the departure of Jurgen Klopp. He also suffered penalty shootout heartache in the DFB Pokal final that season against Bayern Munich. He never quite cracked Europe with Dortmund but reached the quarter-finals of both the Europa League and Champions League. In his two seasons at Dortmund, he won a single trophy-the DFB Pokal in 2017, when they beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 in the final. He left Dortmund with a record of 68 wins, 23 draws, and 17 defeats in 108 games, with a win percentage of 62.96%.
- In May 2018, he signed a two-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), replacing Unai Emery. He spent two-and-a-half trophy-laden years at Paris Saint-Germain and his record with the Ligue 1 outfit is impressive. With players such as Neymar, Edinson Cavani, and Kylian Mbappe at his disposal, he ensured that Paris Saint-Germain was a free-scoring side, with 337 goals scored across his tenure. He won six trophies at Paris Saint-Germain, including two Ligue 1 titles, the Coupe de France, Coupe de la Ligue, and two Trophee des Champions. He guided the club to its first UEFA Champions League final in the 2019-20 season where they ultimately lost to Bayern Munich. In December 2020, he was sacked as PSG manager where he departed Paris Saint-Germain with a record of 95 wins, 13 draws, and 19 defeats in 127 games, with the best win percentage in Ligue 1 history (75.6%) and the highest average of points per game (2.37, tied with his predecessor Emery).
