Childhood and education

Manwell was raised an only child in the US by his German parents who immigrated to the US – his father was working at a local supermarket while his mother was a housewife.

He became interested in music at a very early age, and after his parents noticed it, they enrolled him at a local music school.

Manwell’s family is Christian and both his parents are very religious and went to church at least once a week, so Manwell was singing in a church choir as well in his school’s choir, and upon matriculation, he enrolled at a Bible College which is a higher education institution which prepares its students for the Christian ministry.

Career as a singer

Manwell is best known for having been one of the three vocalists of the Christian hip hop band Group 1 Crew. It was founded by Manwell, Pablo Villatoro, and Blanca Callahan in 2003, who served as the band’s vocalists and rappers. In 2013, Blanca left after becoming pregnant, and in the following year several people joined in including Sarah Sandoz (vocals), Lance Herring on the guitar, Loren ‘Snoopy’ Clark on the bass guitar, and Brian Ramey on the drums.

The group released their debut extended play (EP) in 2006 entitled “I Have a Dream”, followed by “No Plan B (EP)” in 2007, which is the same year of the release of their debut album “Group 1 Crew”. Their second album “Ordinary Dreamers” followed in 2008, and their two EPs “Movin’ the EP” and “Spacebound” came out in 2009 and 2010, respectively. In 2010, they released their third studio album “Outta Space Love”, followed by their fourth album “Fearless” in 2012, while the year 2014 saw two of their new EPs “#Faster” and “# Stronger” come out. Their last album “Power” was released on 29 July 2016, after which the band disbanded in 2017.

The group was nominated for nine Gospel Music Association (GMA) Dove Awards, winning five.

In 2008 and 2009, they won Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year, and in 2010 they won Rap/Hip-Hop Recorded Song of the Year for their single “Movin’”. They won two awards in 2011 for Rap/Hip-Hop Recorded Song of the Year for “Walking On The Stars”, and Rap/Hip-Hop Album of the Year for “Outta Space Love”.

Manwell has sung and rapped for many other performers, and can be heard on many albums of other famous singers. In 2009, he helped record the “Firestarter” song performed by KJ-52, and was then featured on tracks “Center of It (Remix)” by Chris August ,and “F-I-R-E” and “Walking on Air” by Press Play in 2012. The year 2013 saw him work with several musicians, such as Byron ‘Mr. Talkbox’ Chambers on “Party”, Anthem Lights on “All Around the World” and “As Long As You Love Me”, and with V. Rose on “Supernova”.

Manwell also featured in the song “Lights Out” by Amanda Noelle, and some of the latest songs in which he has featured are “Just a Friend” by Jamie Grace and “VIP” by Manic Drive which both came out in 2014, and “Compass” by Jonathan Thulin recorded in 2015.

Manwell also tried becoming an actor, appearing in the comedy film “Mom’s Night Out” in 2014 which starred Sarah Drew, Sean Astin and Patricia Heaton, about several women going to a party while their husbands are taking care of their children. He then appeared in the drama movie “Restored Me” in 2016, which starred Steven Bauer, Will Yun Lee and Richard T. Jones, about an ex-convict who joins a local movie theater and starts believing in God once again, before finding out that his theatre is not what he thought it was.

Manwell met Anjelah Johnson during one of his band’s performance in 2009 – they started talking at the club he was performing at, exchanged phone numbers, and went out on a date just days later.
