Valerie Gillies is a poet born in Canada and raised in Scotland. From 2005 until 2008, she was the second Edinburgh Makar. Gillies has collaborated with visual artists and musicians for literature and arts reviews, BBC radio and television, the theatre. She has also taught extensively creative writing.

Valerie Gillies: Early Life, Education, Family
Gillies was born in 1948 in Canada, Alberta, but grew up in southern Scotland. She graduated from the University of Edinburgh with her bachelor’s and postgraduate degrees. In Mysore, India, she also learned the popular Sanskrit dramas.
She lives in Edinburgh and she married Celtic scholar William Gillies, with whom she has had three children: two daughters and one son.

Valerie Gillies: Career and achievements
As well as writing poetry books, and featuring in numerous anthologies of Faber and Penguin. In 1992, in a scheme initiated by the two districts which were funded by the Scottish Arts Council, Gillies was appointed Writer in Residence for Midlothian and East Lotian. Her other residencies include Edinburgh University, Edinburgh College of Art, several district libraries and a major psychiatric hospital.

Similarly, she was the Trimontium Trust poet laureate ad vitam in 2002, and the second Edinburgh Makar (the poet laureate of Edinburgh) from 2005 to 2008. Besides, Gillies was awarded a Creative Scotland Award in 2005 for writing The Spring Teller (2009), a collection of poetry inspired by the wells and springs in Scotland. Throughout 2009–10 and 2013–14, she spent studying and writing as an associate of Harvard University’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
