Vitali Volodymyrovych Klitschko, professionally known as Vitali Klitschko is a Ukrainian politician and former professional boxer who has served as mayor of Kyiv and head of the Kyiv City State Administration, having held both offices since June 2014.  He began his political career in 2006 when he placed second in the Kyiv mayoral race. He became the leader of the political party UDAR of Vitaliy Klychko. He compiled a career record of 45-2 before retiring to go into politics. He was originally an amateur kickboxer who was knocked out by a spin kick to the jaw in 1992. Vitali also became actively involved in Ukrainian politics in 2005 and combined this with his professional boxing career until his retirement from the sport in 2013 as he became the first professional boxing world champion to hold a Ph.D. degree. Via his Twitter account, on Saturday he posted a video message – with a sternly worded order attached. “I’m Wladimir Klitschko and I am addressing the entire world to stop this war that Russia has started,” he said. “Just today civilians were shot with the rockets, with special operations and civilians getting killed and it’s happening in the heart of Europe. “There is no time to wait because it’s going to lead to a humanitarian catastrophe.

“You need to act now to stop Russian aggression with anything you can have now.” “In an hour, or by tomorrow, it’s going to be too late. Please get into action now, don’t wait. Act now. Stop this war.” Klitschko has been active on Twitter ever since the harrowing conflict began, posting yesterday “There is no democracy without democrats. Get involved and use the freedoms that democracy offers you to express your support and solidarity.” He told ITV’s Good Morning Britain this week: “I don’t have another choice, I have to do that. I’ll be fighting.”

  • Vitali Klitschko kicks off his career competing both in amateur boxing, kickboxing, and sport karate.
  • He was a kickboxing world champion six times and finished his amateur boxing career and turned professional, signing with the German-based Universum Box-Promotion (UBP) in 1996.
  • He won the super-heavyweight championship at the first World Military Games in Italy in 1995 and began his professional boxing career in 1996, winning his first twenty-four fights by either early knockout or technical knockout.
  • Klitschko won the WBO heavyweight title from Herbie Hide of the United Kingdom by a second-round knockout in his 25th pro fight on 26th June 1999.

Political career

  • Klitschko was appointed an adviser to President Yushchenko in 2005 and began campaigning for Mayor of Kyiv shortly after his retirement in 2005. He lost the 2006 mayoral election to Leonid Chernovetskyi but placed second with 26% of the vote.
  • He was elected as a people’s deputy to the Kyiv City Council since the “Civic party” PORA-ROP won 14 seats in the 2006 election and ran again and won 18% of the vote in the May 2008 Kyiv local election. 
  • He simultaneously led the Vitali Klitschko Bloc that won 10.61% of the votes and 15 seats and again, he was elected into the Kyiv City Council.
