Who is C. Thomas Howell?

American actor Christopher Thomas Howell was born in Los Angeles, California USA, on 7 December 1966, making Sagittarius his zodiac sign. He’s had roles in more than 220 TV series and movies, but is probably still known best for playing the lead character Ponyboy Curtis in the 1983 crime movie “The Outsiders”, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, and which also starred Matt Dillon and Ralph Macchio. It follows the rivalry between the Socs and Greasers gangs, and the movie won one of its five award nominations.

Thomas is still today highly active in the movie industry, and is currently working on four upcoming projects, which include the movies “Old Dads” and “Reagan”, as well as the series “Obliterated”.

Education and early life

Thomas was raised in Los Angeles alongside his brother John and sisters Candy and Stacy, by their mother Candice and father Christopher N; their father was a rodeo performer and stunt co-ordinator, while their mother was a housewife. Christopher and Candice divorced before Thomas turned 10.

He grew up wanting to follow in his father’s footsteps, and was a rodeo star in his early teens, while he also dreamed about becoming a stuntman. Thomas enrolled at Saugus High School in 1980, and made his debut film appearance two years later, playing Tyler in the evergreen family science fiction adventure movie “E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial”, which won 52 of its 88 award nominations, including four Oscar wins, two of which were for Best Effects, Visual Effects and Best Sound.

Thomas matriculated in 1984, and then continued acting rather than to go after a college degree.

Roles in movies

Thomas portrayed one of the main characters Billy in the 1984 action comedy “Tank”, directed by Marvin J. Chomsky, and which also starred James Garner and Shirley Jones. It follows Sergeant Major Zack (and his Sherman tank) as he’s feuding with a corrupt sheriff, and the movie was nominated for a Young Artist Award for Best Family Motion Picture – Drama. Some of Thomas’ other notable performances in the ‘80s were in the 1984 action thriller “Red Dawn”, the 1987 action “Into the Homeland” and the 1989 romantic action adventure “The Return of the Musketeers”.

The year 1993 saw him play Lieutenant Thomas D. Chamberlain in the critically acclaimed historical war drama “Gettysburg”, written and directed by Ron Maxwell, and which starred Tom Berenger, Martin Sheen and Stephen Lang. The movie covers the 1863 battle at Gettysburg, and it won one of its two award nominations. Thomas could then have been seen playing both lead and supporting characters in the 1995 action science fiction “Suspect Device”, the 1997 drama “Laws of Deception”, and the 1998 mystery thriller “Fatal Affair”.

What marked the 2000s for him was perhaps portraying Preston Webb in the hit 2004 biographical action adventure “Hidalgo”, which Joe Johnston directed, and which starred Zuleikha Robinson, Omar Sharif and Viggo Mortensen. Set in 1890, the movie follows a cowboy who’s about to compete in a deadly desert horse race in Arabia, and the movie won one of its three award nominations. Thomas had a couple of notable performances in the remainder of the 2000s, in movies such as the 2005 thriller “The Lost Angel”, the 2007 horror mystery “The Haunting of Marsten Manor” and the 2009 comedy “American Pie Presents: The Book of Love”.

The year 2015 heard him voice Will Magnus in the animated action adventure “Justice League: Gods and Monsters”, directed by Sam Liu, and which starred Benjamin Bratt, Michael C. Hall and Tamara Taylor. It follows Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman who’ve been framed with murder, and are now being hunted by the government.

Thomas’ three most recent film roles have been in the 2021 thriller “The Wrong Path”, the 2022 comedy “Because We’re Family” and the 2022 crime drama “Crimson Point”.

Thomas’ debut TV series role was playing Scott Morgan in two episodes of the 1983 drama “Two Marriages”, which starred Louanne, Tom Mason and Karen Carlson, and follows the members of the Armstrong and Daley families; the series won one of its four award nominations. Thomas had only two other TV series roles in the ‘80s, portraying Post Office Worker in two episodes of the 1986 mystery comedy “Moonlighting” and Jenner Brading in the 1989 episode “The Eyes of the Panther” of the fantasy horror “Nightmare Classics”.

It follows a group of people whose plane’s crashed in the Amazon, and the series won two of its five award nominations.

The 2000s then saw Thomas appear in an episode of only a couple of series, including the comedy “Son of the Beach”, the crime comedy “The District” and the drama “Summerland”.

From 2015 through 2017, he played Daniel Stinger in the popular crime science fiction “Stitchers”, which Jeff Schechter created, and which starred Ritesh Rajan, Kyle Harris and Emma Ishta. It follows a young woman who’s begun working for a secret government organization which can look into the minds of the recently deceased – the series was nominated for four awards.

Thomas’ three most recent TV series roles have been in the 2021 episode “Dead and Breakfast/Pesticide” of the fantasy mystery horror “Creepshow”, three episodes of the 2021 horror thriller “The Walking Dead” and 12 episodes of the 2022 war action “SEAL Team”.

Thomas is quite open when it comes to sharing the details of his love life with the public. He and famous American actress Kyle Richards dated sometime in the ‘80s; she’s appeared in nearly 50 TV series and movies, and is perhaps still known best for starring as Lindsey in the 1978 horror thriller film “Halloween”.

Thomas met Canadian-American actress Rae Dawn Chong on the set of the 1986 comedy movie “Soul Man”, and they married on 11 July 1989, but divorced a year later.

Thomas’ second wife was non-celebrity American Sylvie Anderson; they exchanged vows on 25 July 1992. She gave birth to their daughter Isabelle Howell on 17 February 1993, son Dashiell Howell on 2 January 1997, and their second son Liam Howell followed on 24 April 2001; Sylvie filed for divorce in 2015, and it was finalized in 2016.

Thomas is yet to mention other women whom he’s perhaps dated, he seems to be unattached as of April 2023, has been married twice and has three children with his second wife Sylvie Anderson.

Thomas was charged with assaulting a skateboarder on 9 December 2000, but was acquitted on all five misdemeanor charges in November of the following year.
