Where is Doreen Lioy Today?

Doreen Lioy is an American magazine editor, but she is probably better known to the world as the widow of the serial killer, Richard Ramirez. Their relationship started when he was in jail and the two were married in the prison. However, the two separated before his death in 2013, and since then, Doreen has disappeared from the media, and there is no information about her. She didn’t even come to claim Richard’s body following his death.

The two developed a strong bond, which eventually resulted in a marriage. She would visit him as many as four times a week, and the two started a romance – in 1998 Richard asked her to marry him, and in 1996 the two married at California’s San Quentin State Prison.

Over the years, Doreen became one of his main defenders, and opposed his death sentence, and along with other of his supporters, advocated for a reduced sentence. As her life story was becoming more intriguing to the public, she started being featured in various documentaries about her lover, including “Biography” (2001), and “THS Investigates” in 2005. Thanks to her fight against Richard’s execution, the sentence was delayed almost indefinitely, and Richard eventually passed away from B-cell lymphoma at 53 years of age, in the Marin General Hospital.

Before his death, Doreen and Richard ‘separated’ – of course they never lived together – but the reason hasn’t been revealed. Since then, Doreen has been away from the public eye, and no information has become available about her.

Richard Ramirez Bio

Born Ricardo Leyva Munoz Ramirez on the 29th February 1960, in El Paso, Texas USA, he became known as the Night Stalker, a convicted serial killer, burglar and rapist, terrorizing the people of Los Angeles and San Francisco from June 1984 until August 1985.

He was the youngest child of five born to Julian, a Mexican policeman, and his wife Mercedes Ramirez. At just ten years old, Richard developed a marijuana addiction, but started bonding with his cousin Mike, who was a decorated US Army Green Beret combat veteran. Mike would often brag to Richard about his actions in Vietnam, including raping women. Richard took him as a role model, and started learning various military skills from Mike. On the 4th May 1973, Mike shot his wife Jessie, and Richard was in their house when it happened. After this, Richard started living with his older sister and her husband, wanting to avoid contact with the rest of his family. He started using LSD, and took an interest in Satanism.

He went to Jefferson High School but quit in the ninth grade.

Richard started working at a local Holiday Inn, but this didn’t last long as he was caught by a man whose wife he was trying to rape, beat Richard senseless at the scene. They filed charges against Richard, but the case was dropped as the couple lived out of state and decided not to return to testify.

First Murder and Killing Spree

In April 1984 he killed 9-year-old girl, Mei Leung; he dragged her to the basement of the hotel where he was living, raped and beat the girl before he inflicted her with fatal stab wounds, and left her body hanging on a pipe. At first, he wasn’t connected with this case but later his DNA was discovered at the crime scene.

His first identified murder from the Night Stalker crimes happened in June 1984 when Jennie Vincow was found at her apartment – she was stabbed and her throat slashed, almost decapitated, and his fingerprints were at the crime scene. From June 1984 until August 1985 he killed 14 people, while others survived his attacks, including a couple from Northridge, California, Chris and Virginia Peterson. He shot Virginia in the face with a .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun and shot Chris in the temple, but they survived, and Richard escaped.

Capture, Sentence, Death

On the 30th August 1985, Ramirez traveled to see his brother in Tucson, Arizona; however, they didn’t meet and he returned to Los Angeles the following morning.

As he would leave traces on crime scenes, police knew who he was, and he was sought throughout the US. He became a major story of every newspaper, and a few elderly Mexican women recognized him, calling him ‘El Matador, (The Killer).

He fled the store and tried to hijack a car, however, bystanders noticed him and began a pursuit. He was eventually struck on the head with a metal bar by one man from the group of people who chased him, ending the pursuit. They beat him relentlessly until the police arrived and took him into custody. In his first courtroom appearance, Richard yelled “Hail Satan” and had a pentagram drawn on his hand.

He was charged with thirteen counts of murder, five attempted murders, eleven sexual assaults, and fourteen burglaries – on the 7th November 1989, he was sentenced to death. Following the death sentence, Richard said, “Big Deal. Death always went with the territory. See you in Disneyland.”. The whole trial cost $1.8 million, which at the time was the most expensive trial in the history of California.

However, numerous appeals by his fans, lawyers, and his eventual wife delayed his death sentence, and Richard eventually passed away from the b-cell lymphoma at Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae, California on the 7th June 2013. He also had chronic hepatitis C viral infection, and over the years developed a chronic substance abuse. He had waited for his death sentence to be carried out for over 23 years.

On his mental health evaluation, Richard was determined as a primary psychopath, and also had a narcissistic personality disorder, and antisocial personality disorder, in addition to other problems with his mental health. He was also diagnosed with schizophrenia – his use of LSD, cocaine, and PCP only made it worse.
