Jazz Smollett was born in Northern California, USA, on 1 April 1980 – her zodiac sign is Aries and she holds American nationality. Jazz was raised alongside her siblings Jojo, Jussie, Jurnee, Jake and Jocqui, in New York by their African-American mother who was a housewife, and their Jewish father who died of cancer when Jazz was still quite young.

Jazz became interested in acting at a very early age, and practiced her skills at her elementary school’s drama club – she became interested in cooking around the same time, as she would often help her mother in the kitchen. She attended a local high school, at which she started playing soccer and tennis, while still helping her mother with raising her siblings.

After matriculating in 1998, Jazz enrolled at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2002.

Career in the film industry

Jazz has been credited with only one acting performance other than in “On Our Own” – in 2007, she starred as Lennox Jones in the short romantic film “I Want You”, written and directed by Nefertite Nguvu, and which also starred Ohene Cornelius – the movie follows two New Yorker’s who fall in love, and it won an Audience Award for Best Film at the New York African-American Women in Cinema Festival.

She has three producing credits: the 2009 short news “Hydeia Broadbent Speaks”, the 2013 talk show “The Reel Story: 12 Years a Slave”, and the 2016 family series “Smollett Eats”. Jazz hasn’t talked about any other men she might have dated, so as of December 2020, she is single, has been married once, and has one daughter.

Hobbies and other interests

Jazz is interested in photography, and many of the pictures taken by her can be found uploaded onto her Instagram account, which is today followed by more than 125,000 people.

Before she gave birth, Jazz was interested in travelling and visited many US states for both work and pleasure, while it is believed that she has travelled to Africa on several occasions, mostly because of her mother’s African descent.
