Joyce was raised in Speedway, Indiana, alongside her three siblings by their father Paul DeWitt who is originally from Denmark, and their mother Norma who is from Italy.

She grew up being interested in acting and debating, and after finishing elementary school attended Speedway Senior High School where she was a cheerleader, and for a short period of time she worked at the ticket office of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Joyce was a member of the Indiana High School Forensic Association, and through them entered competitions in debate and speech. Upon matriculation, she enrolled at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where she was a member of the Chi Omega women’s fraternity, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in theatre in 1971. She continued her education at the University of California, obtaining her Master’s degree in theatre in 1974.

Movie roles

Joyce made her debut film appearance in 1978 in the drama “With This Ring”, in which she portrayed Jilly Weston, and then appeared in the parody movie “Airplane: The Sequel” in 1982 starring Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty and Lloyd Bridges, which follows the story of people who are inside a space shuttle which is heading straight to the Sun.

In 1989 she portrayed Cousin Jeri in the comedy movie “Not Without My Cousin”, and was then invited to star as Linda Hayden in the comedy movie “Spring Fling!” in 1995, which also starred James Echouse and Justin Burnette, and which is about a teacher Linda who is taking her male students on a trip to Los Angeles, California.

In 2009 she portrayed Jolene in the family movie “Call of the Wild” which starred Cristopher Lloyd, Veronica Cartwright and Christopher Dempsey, about a young girl who, after saving an injured wolf, is noticed by an evil man who wants to kill the wolf. Joyce was praised for her performance of Irene in the offbeat comedy movie “Failing Better Now” in 2010, and was then invited to portray supporting character Randi Toney in the film “The Great Fight” in 2011.

Several sources say that in the ‘70s the popular actress was married to Ray Buktenica, an American actor best known for starring as Benny Goodwin in the sitcom “Rhoda”.

The two allegedly met while attending college and married in 1979, however, after seven years of being together, they ‘divorced’ in 1986. However, both have said that they were living together during those years but weren’t married. Joyce explained how the relationship was very hard and how she would never do anything similar to what she did for Ray for any other man.

Joyce then began dating Henry Bushkin, who was the lawyer of Johnny Carson, an American TV host, comedian, and a writer. They were living together without having any children, but it’s unclear of their current status. Joyce appears to be officially single; she doesn’t have children.
