She was eventually placed in Buckner Orphans Home where she spent most of her childhood.

Lulu was a very naughty child, who often ran around with her peers making a mess wherever she would go. After completing her elementary education, she enrolled at W. W. Samuel High School at which she learned that she was very good at singing, and upon matriculation in 1963, she chose not to enroll at a college but to start working to financially support herself. Lulu worked at numerous placings over the next six years, before she became a cast member of the show “Hee Haw”.

Lulu’s career as a singer and author

Lulu appeared in the show “Hee Haw” for around a year when she started abusing drugs, and was arrested on multiple occasions, which led to her removal from the show. It was very hard for her to find a similar job after this, and so she resolved to get clean and rejoin the cast of “Hee Haw” – she found comfort in God and became a ‘true Christian’.

After it was revealed that Lulu was completely clean and sober, she was allowed to return to the show, but she had one condition – one Christian song had to be sung in each episode.

Her love for Christianity and music led her to found the band Christian Barber Shop, together with Grandpa Jones, Roy Clark and Archie Campbell. She also started working as a solo gospel singer around the same time, and has since released many albums without having ever trained at a music school. Lulu and her friends from Christian Barber Shop were inducted into the Country Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1999.

In the early ‘80s she started doing stand-up comedy, and her best performance was in 2010 when her show “Seven Times” peaked at #2 on a list compiled by the magazine “Cash Box”.

One of Lulu’s most recently released albums has been “At Last”, which came out on 15 January 2013, in collaboration with George Jones, Linda Davis and Dolly Parton among others. She has published two books during her career: “Kitchen Komforts: Fabulous Comfort Food Recipes and Inspiring Short Stories to Nourish the Soul” in 2003, and in 2019 Lulu’s new book came out entitled “This Is My Story; This Is My Song”.

Love life and husband

It is rumored that Lulu dated many men while she was addicted to drugs, but after becoming clean, she fell in love with Gary M. Toman, who was also a Christian and often went to church with her.

They exchanged wedding vows on 2 July 1975, and were together for two years before problems started. Lulu hasn’t commented on what has exactly happened between her and Gary that led to their divorce, but it is believed by many of her fans that he began abusing alcohol and Lulu couldn’t tolerate it.

In 1987, she met the hairdresser Woody Smith, and soon became pregnant with him. Lulu wasn’t planning to marry again, but felt that she had to after becoming pregnant, and they walked the aisle on 14 February 1988 – she gave birth to their first son, Damon Eric just two months after the wedding, and four years later to their second son Justin Collin. Lulu and Woody divorced several years later, after he came out as supposedly gay.

As of August 2020, Lulu is single, has been married twice, and has two sons.

Hobbies and other interests

Lulu’s main hobby has been travelling since she matriculated from high school, and she has been all around the US to sing her gospel songs, while she has also performed in several European countries such as Spain, France and England.

She is reputedly a very good cook which is how and why she was able to write her own cook book with some of her own unique recipes.

Lulu is a huge lover of animals and has had several pet dogs over the years.

She is keen on reading historical books and her two favorites are “The Silk Roads: A New History of the World” by Peter Frankopan and “SPQR: A History of Ancient Rome” by Mary Beard.

In her spare time Lulu likes to watch Hollywood movies, and her favorite actors and actresses are Denzel Washington, Mel Gibson and Evangeline Lilly, while some of her favorite movies are “Braveheart”, “The Passion of the Christ” and “The Patriot”.

Weight

Most people remember Lulu as the overweight woman from the show “Hee Haw”, who tried to kill herself three or four times because of how her weight affected her life as well as because people didn’t treat her well due to her weight.

She once weighed around 360lbs (163kgs), and that was a turning point for Lulu, who chose to follow a strict diet, and then in 2004 underwent the laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding procedure. The procedure caused infection to spread around her body and after this was fixed, Lulu underwent another operation in November 2005.

Age, height and net worth

Lulu is 75 years old. She has brown hair which she has dyed red, her eyes are blue, her height is 5ft 5ins (1.65m) and she weighs around 145lbs (66kgs).
