Maria was abandoned shortly after she was born, and was adopted by a single American woman Peggy Lark.

Peggy raised Maria as her own daughter in New York City, providing her with everything she needed, and also supporting her dream of becoming a famous actress by taking her to numerous auditions – she also took her to the audition at which Maria won the role of Bridgette DuBois at the age of eight.
