After several film appearances, Talbot then focused more on television opportunities, appearing in “Joe and Mabel” playing the titular Mabel Spooner opposite Larry Blyden.
The show aired in 1955 and is based on the radio show of the same name, focusing on the titular couple, with Mabel notably eager to pursue marriage with her partner Joe. She then made a guest appearance in “Perry Mason” before being cast in the second season of “The Thin Man”, in which she played the con artist, Blondie Collins. The show is based on the novel of the same name written by Dashiell Hammett.
Afterwards, she was cast in the first season of “Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer”, portraying the struggling actress Susan Reed. The show is based on the character of the same name created by Spillane in numerous crime novels.
One of her last projects during the 1950s was an appearance in the popular western series “Gunsmoke”, which she reprised once more in a 1960 episode. In 1966, Nita was cast in the most well-known role of her career, playing the spy Marya in the television series “Hogan’s Heroes”, set in a prisoner of war (POW) camp in Germany during World War II.
The sitcom aired for six seasons, and followed several soldiers who go undercover as prisoners to help learn more about the German war effort, and to sabotage whatever plans they could. They also helped other POW’s to escape through a series of routes the allies set up.
The show met with a lot of success and was nominated numerous times, with Talbot gaining her most memorable performance in the episode called “Hostage”. The show brought her a lot of fame, and after it ended, she was then cast in the film “The Day of the Locust”, which starred Donald Sutherland, John Hillerman and Karen Black. The film was set before World War II and is based on the Nathanael West novel of the same name published in 1939.
On television, she appeared in both “Here We Go Again”, and “Man Against Crime”.
Later Career and Retirement
In the 1970s, Talbot returned to prominence with her work in the TV detective series “Columbo”, and the pilot for “Funny Face”. She was then cast as a regular character in the soap opera “Search for Tomorrow”, which ran for 35 years, and in which she appeared shortly after the end of “Hogan’s Heroes”. In the 1980s, she played the character Delfina in the medical drama “General Hospital”. In the show, her character is an old friend of Tiffany Hill, who is hired to become the designer for the wedding of Luke and Laura.
Following her stint in “General Hospital”, she took fewer projects, only appearing in shows or films about once a year. Her appearances became more sporadic, with one of her last film appearances being in “Starting from Scratch”, alongside Bill Daily.
During the latter part of her career, she ventured into voice acting and mainly did animated projects. Her last role was in the animated series “Spider-Man”, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, which ran on the Fox Kids Network for four years – she voiced the businesswoman Anastasia Hardy, the mother of Felicia Hardy also known as the Black Cat.
Personal Life
Nita’s first marriage was to actor Don Gordon in 1954, known for appearing in numerous films as a supporting character to his friend, Steve McQueen. They stayed together for four years before divorcing. Her next marriage was to actor Thomas A. Geas in 1961, staying together for a long time before also divorcing, but having a child together; Geas passed away in 2010.
Her older sister, Gloria also had acting roles but didn’t have a prominent career like Nita. She passed away in 2014. In recent years, she’s been living out her retirement, enjoying life as she approaches her 90s.
