Career
While attending university, her friends dared her to participate in a sorority production by auditioning for a singing part. She had begun dancing and cheerleading from a young age, but never trained in singing or considered that she may have a talent for it.
She said that they all laughed when they dared her, ‘But I’ll take a dare from anybody. So I started singing, and I think people were shocked by what came out. I was shocked by what came out.’ Her voice blew everyone away, and she landed a solo and fell in love with singing; she knew that was her calling.
In her senior year, she regularly performed at Willie’s Saloon in Stillwater, Oklahoma, while working at To Write Love On Her Arms (TWLOHA), a non-profit organization, as she was still passionate about having a career in public relations. She later realized that she wanted to pursue a career in country music, saying ‘It’s like I was watching God place the puzzle pieces of my life’.
She said that her experience from dance and cheerleading helped her to be confident in front of crowds, and from the young age of 10 she had begun writing poetry and even song-writing, which helped her improve her song-writing later in life, once she began making her own music. She also said that her degree helped her develop a knack for how business works, charity work helped her to become empathetic and know how to connect with people, and both helped her grow comfortable with public speaking and performing.
In an interview with Taste of Country, she recalled a time she prayed and asked God why she should be a singer, ‘I felt like He just smacked me upside the head and said, ‘I gave you a stage and a microphone, what more do you want? You’re supposed to get up there and sing songs that matter. You’re supposed to tell your story.’’
She listened, and attended the Nashville auditions for NBC’s “The Voice;” having found the audition when an online search for “How to be on Jeopardy” led her to a list of upcoming reality show auditions. ‘I was a broke college student!.. goofing off looking for how to win some money,’ and when she saw “The Voice” audition, she thought, ‘Why not? You only live once!’
She appeared in the second season of “The Voice” In 2012, which Christina Aguilera, Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and CeeLo Green judged.
She performed “Last Name” at her Blind Audition, and both Blake and Christina turned for her – Adam and CeeLo’s teams were already full, so they could not turn if they wanted to. Being an aspiring country singer, Adley chose Team Blake over Team Christina, and on 5 March, she was paired against RaeLynn in the Battle Rounds in episode six, and the pair sang “Free Fallin’.” Blake chose RaeLynn as the winner of the battle, and Adley was eliminated from the competition – Jermaine Paul (another member of Blake’s team) won the second season of the show. Although she didn’t win the competition or get very far, she did receive a lot of exposure, and subsequently released her own music independently.
When she auditioned for the show, she was already working on “Like a Lady.” After Force Majeuere Music offered to sign her, she moved to Nashville – ‘I started learning what it meant to write with a purpose, to combine the structure that mainstream music requires with my own heart and soul.’ Over the course of five months, she wrote and recorded several songs before finally choosing her favorite seven to put on her album. In an interview, she stated that it was only after choosing the tracklist and listening to the whole album again that she realized that every song had the underlying theme of strength. Two examples she gave were the lyrics, ‘If you want a doormat, don’t call me,’ from “Addicted to Love” and “I ain’t lettin’ anyone tell me how I feel” from her title track.
Her break-up ballad, “Me Without Him,” also has the underlying theme of inner-strength; Adley said that the song is about a ‘heart-wrenching breakup,’ but the main character is rising above it and not acting like a victim. She said that the character essentially says, ‘I still have to know who I am as an individual.’
The songs on the album are all inspired by Adley’s personal life within the last year that she wrote and recorded them, ‘This time has been about figuring out who I am, and what I stand for.’ Her track, “Crazy Dreams,” was developed with the help and encouragement from her friends who are part of Hinder, a rock band.
Adley stated that performing onstage is highly-addictive, and there is nothing that gives the same rush, ‘It’s like this little torch has been lit, and I just want to go and start a wildlife with it.’
She plans on remaining humble and responsible, no matter how famous she becomes; she feels that her talent is not something she has earned but is rather a gift from God and not something to be taken for granted. ‘I feel like God’s trusting me with something, and I’m just trying to be the best woman I can be for whatever He’s got up his sleeve. I suppose He didn’t want me in a cubicle after all.’
“Stay At Home Soldier” was her first hit single, released on 6 April 2015 onto YouTube. “Don’t Wanna Love Him” is another song of hers that become widely popular online, and a few of her songs also went viral on Facebook, including “Little Black Dress,” “Never Read This,” “ Last Name,” and “Weather the Storm.”
She won the Grammy Amplifier award in 2016.
Her YouTube channel, The Adley Show, has more than 65,000 subscribers who love her music-related content, including covers, original songs, and music videos. She also uploads vlogs, pranks, and viral game challenges to her channel.
