Early Life, Education, and Career Beginnings

David Howard grew up in Alabama, and at a young age he developed an interest in imitations. He learned various dialects and characters, practicing often as a child to learn how to speak in various voices, a skill that would be helpful to him later on.

He didn’t intend on pursuing such a career at a young age, and after matriculating from high school he enrolled at the University of Montevallo for his bachelor’s degree. The university is located in nearby Montevallo, and is the only liberal arts college in the state. During his time there, he began gaining an interest in acting, and worked with the school’s theatre group.

Following his graduation, he contemplated pursuing a full-time career in acting, and did so after consulting his mother who encouraged his interests. One of his first big projects was in a theatrical production of “Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas: The Musical” in which he played the role of Grandpa. The play is based on the book of the same name, one of the popular Dr. Seuss books created for children, which were known for their use of rhymed verses and the shared art style and the world the writer created. He worked on the production team for five national tours.

Continued Acting Work

Following his theatre projects, Thornton then ventured into the world of video games, providing numerous voices for “Invizimals: The Lost Kingdom”. The video game was released in 2013, and is a part of the much larger “Invizimals” franchise with its release coinciding with the European version “Invizimals: The Alliance”. The video game’s origins can be traced back to “Invizimals” which was released four years earlier for the PlayStation Portable (PSP). The game is known for its use of augmented reality, with “The Lost Kingdom” being a version of it available for the PlayStation 3 (PS3).

The franchise has gained popularity to the point that it has been aired as an animated series. Numerous other media of it is available, including trading cards, comics, and toys.

Apart from his work with “Invizimals”, David sought opportunities in other fields, and began working on small animated projects on YouTube which would eventually lead to his next big role.

Detective Comics (DC) Adaptations

In 2016, he was cast in the YouTube series “Nightwing: Escalation”, which is one of the many fans or amateur efforts of the online platform to provide alternative original programs, taking advantage of its high traffic. The series is based on the DC character “Nightwing” or Dick Grayson, who was previously the partner of Batman under the name Robin, before striking out on his own as another vigilante in Gotham city.

He is a part of what is referred to as the Batman family, a group of superheroes and vigilantes associated with Batman in some form or manner, and is considered a favorite by many “Batman” fans. In the show, Nightwing is seen defending Gotham in the absence of Batman, when the Joker strikes once more. David’s portrayal of Joker gained him a lot of attention.

His work there brought more opportunities his way, including a guest appearance in the series “Gotham”. The show aired on Fox and is set in Gotham city before the rise of Batman, following the exploits of James Gordon who would later become police commissioner.

The show is noted for showcasing the origin of many Batman villains, including The Riddler, Hugo Strange, Bane, Poison Ivy, and Ra’s al Ghul.

The film was created by Damien Leone, and continues the story of the homicidal clown character Art, who first appeared in the anthology film “All Hallows’ Eve” in 2013. The film follows victims who find themselves in a decrepit apartment building during Halloween, where they are stalked and killed by Art. The film was initially released in 2016 at the Telluride Horror Show Film Festival, and later had a theatrical release in 2018, attracting mostly positive reviews, with many enjoying its simplicity and its ode to 1980s horror/slasher films. Since then, a sequel has been announced to be under production, and currently in the writing phase. David Howard is set to reprise his role as Art, gaining praise from many outlets thanks to his previous performance.
