Derek was has raised with his four sisters – Sharee, Marabeth, Katherine, and Julianne, in Salt Lake City by their father Bruce Robert Hough, who is best known for serving as the chairman of the Utah Republican Party, and mother Mari Anne Hough who is a teacher.

Derek became interested in acting at a very early age, and when he turned 12, his parents divorced and decided to send him to London, where he started taking dancing lessons under Corky and Shirley Ballas.
