Before starting her professional career, Chant worked in retail jobs and a pharmacy. After her graduation in 1991, she has been working with the New South Wales Health Department, currently holding the position of Deputy Secretary, Population and Public Health, and Chief Health Officer.
Chant also had worked as the Director of Public Health Unit, Director of Health Protection, and Deputy Chief Health Officer. Her job is responsible for controlling tobacco hazards, reduction of hazardous drinking and obesity, promoting physical exercise, end-of-life care, and organ donation.
