Helen was raised alongside her sister, Katie Baxendale in Shenstone, Staffordshire by their father who was a theatre actor, and their mother who was teaching at a local high school. Helen grew up wanting to become a ballet dancer, and studied at King Edward VI School, Lichfield. She continued her education at the Elmhurst School for Dance, where she was focused on improving her ballet skills but after launching her career as an actress at the age of 17, she quit dance and transferred to Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. She then joined the Glasgow Citizen’s Theatre in 1992, and was with them until 1995.
