Google published the most searched athletes of 2020. Surprisingly, two of the greatest footballers in the world, Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentine Lionel Messi did not make the list of the top 20 searched athletes. Brazilian Neymar did not make the list either. Uruguayan Luis Suarez became the most searched soccer player of 2020. And the reason is his departure from FC Barcelona to rival club Atletico Madrid in September 2020. Another footballer making the most searched list is Thiago Silva became the second most searched soccer player of 2020 after he transferred from French club, PSG to English club, Chelsea in August 2020.

NASCAR race driver, Ryan Newman became the most searched athletes of 2020. The 43-years-old Newman was searched most on Google after he suffered a serious car crash while leading on the final corner of the final lap of the Daytona 500 on 17 February 2020. He suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the accident. He returned to racing after he was medically cleared in April 2020.

The 6 time NBA Champion, 6 time NBA Finals MVP, and 5 times NBA Most Valuable Player Jordan became the most searched basketball player of 2020. The credit goes to the 10-part docuseries on Jordan, released in 2020. The documentary went on to become the most-watched documentary in the history of ESPN.

The two-time world heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury made the list of most searched athletes of 2020 in third place. He is the first heavyweight in history to have held the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring magazine titles. His rematch fight with Deontay Wilder took him to third place. Fury’s fight with Wilder for the WBC heavyweight title in 2018 was controversially scored as a draw. Fury dominated Fury in the rematch in February 2020 and defeated him by a technical knockout in the seventh round. The third rematch between the two scheduled for July 2020 was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Brady who played for the Patriots for 20 years signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for 50 million in March 2020.

Another legendary footballer, Drew Brees made the list of most searched athletes of 2020 in 9th place. Saints legend Brees is a one time Super Bowl champion and one time Super Bowl MVP. The 42-years-old quarterback signed a two-year contract extension with Saints in March 2020. He became trending over the internet after he suffered a serious injury during the Saints’ Week 10 game against the San Francisco 49ers in November 2020. He returned to football in December 2020.

Mike Tyson made 5th on the list of most searched athletes of 2020. The 54-years old Mike Tyson is considered one of the best heavyweight boxers of all time. He was the undisputed world heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990. Tyson remained in the headlines in 2020 after he announced his comeback to fight former four-division world champion, Roy Jones Jr in an eight-round exhibition fight. The two faced each other on 28 November 2020 that eventually ended the draw. His fight with Jones Jr. made him the 5th most searched athlete of 2020.

Zanardi who is also a para cyclist suffered a serious road accident in June 2020 while competing in the Obiettivo Tricolore hand-cycling race, near Sienna. He was placed in a medically induced coma after undergoing three hours of neurosurgery and maxillofacial surgery. He was reported to be able to shake hands in December 2020. The serious accident he suffered led him to one of the most searched athletes of 2020.

Delonte West, once an NBA star became one of the most searched athletes of 2020 after the photo of himself panhandling went viral over the internet in September 2020. He was seen asking for money wandering homeless in Dallas. Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban picked up West and offered to pay for rehabilitation treatment for his mental health issues. He was spotted being beaten up on the streets of Washington DC in January 2020.
