Childhood and education
Gwilym was raised in Bristol alongside his older brothers Geraint and Owen and older sister Rhiannon, by their father who was a lawyer, and their mother who was working as a secretary at a local insurance company.
Gwilym became interested in acting while attending high school, where he was a member of the school’s drama club and appeared in most of the plays performed at school, and a few performed at a local theatre. He was also physically active as his was playing soccer with his peers. Upon matriculation in 2001, he enrolled at Cardiff University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature and drama in 2004, then studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and in 2008 he was awarded the Guildhall Gold Medal.
Roles in TV series
Gwilym made his debut TV series appearance in 1997, portraying James Hunter in 13 episodes of the children’s book series “Animal Ark”, but his next role wasn’t until 11 years later in the British comedy drama series “Mutual Friends”, which starred Marc Warren, Keeley Hawes, and Alexander Armstrong.
The story is about two friends who are meeting up after their mutual friend committed suicide; the series was nominated for three awards.

The year 2011 saw him play Senior Technician Mountain in the critically acclaimed romantic thriller movie “The Tourist” which starred Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp and which follows Frank with whom Elise falls in love after he comes to Italy from America. The film was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards.
In 2011, Gwilym appeared as DC Block in the action crime thriller movie “Isle of Dogs” which received rather poor reviews as it has the rating 3.5/10 on the movie and TV series rating website IMDb.com.
