Joanne was raised in Brooklyn an only child by her mother who was a theatre actress, and her father who was a construction site worker. She attended Elite High School, Dalton at which she became interested in acting, and appeared in school plays.
Upon matriculation, she studied Theatre Arts and Performance at Liberal Arts Bard College, New York before switching to the Juilliard School, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2004.
Upon graduation, Joanne started by working a variety of jobs to financially support herself, while making her way up in the film industry. She travelled several times to Los Angeles to attend auditions, before she made her breakthrough performance.
