Born Jeffrey John Hornacek on the 3rd May 1963, in Elmhurst, Illinois USA, he is a former professional NBA player and later coach. He went to Lyons Township High School in La Grange, Cook County, Illinois, and following matriculation enrolled at Iowa State where he spent four years, playing basketball for the university team.

He was one of the best players in his class and his jersey No. 14 was later retired by Iowa State Cyclones.

To speak of his professional playing career, he was drafted by the Phoenix Suns in 1986 as the 46th overall pick. He played for the Suns until 1992 when he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, while the Suns got Charles Barkley, and the 76ers also acquired Tim Perry and Andrew Lang. Two years later he was sent to the Utah Jazz, and became their legend alongside Karl Malone and Stockton, playing for the Jazz until his retirement in 2000 – his jersey was also retired by the Utah Jazz.

He finished his playing career with 15,659 points and 5,281 assists.

He was the assistant coach of the Utah Jazz from 2011 to 2013 under Tyrone Corbin, though he joined the Jazz in 2008 as a shooting assistant coach for some of the players on the roster. From Utah he moved to the Phoenix Suns as a head coach, but without any major success, and as the head coach of the New York Knicks from 2016 to 2018.
