Adam Rich was an American actor who was famous for his role as Nicholas Bradford in the TV series “Eight Is Enough” which ran for five seasons (1977–1981). Adam Rich, the child actor with a pageboy mop-top who charmed TV audiences as “America’s little brother” on Eight Is Enough, died in his Los Angeles home on January 7, 2023. He dies at 54. Danny Deraney, Mr. Rich’s publicist, confirmed the death. Mr. Deraney described Mr. Rich as “kind, generous, and a warrior in the fight against mental illness.” “He was unselfish and always looked out for those he cared about. Which is why many people who grew up with him feel a part of their childhood gone, and sad today,” Mr. Deraney added. “He really was America’s Little Brother.” The cause of death was under investigation but was not considered to be suspicious. 

Adam had several run-ins with police related to drugs and alcohol – and sought treatment at the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage. He suffered from a type of depression that defied treatment and he had tried to erase the stigma of talking about mental illness, said publicist Danny Deraney. He unsuccessfully tried experimental cures over the years. He discussed his mental health on Twitter and noted in October that he’d been sober for seven years. He said he wasn’t perfect – referring to arrests, many stints in rehab, several overdoses, and “countless detoxes (and) relapses” – and urged his nearly 19,000 followers to never give up. 

Back in 1989, he almost died of a valium overdose in 1989. In 1996, there was a media hoax that Rich had been murdered; the story was published in the San Francisco-based magazine “Might”, with Rich’s consent. “Might” writer Dave Eggers included the incident in his memoir “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius.”
