Former NBA commissioner David Stern died at the age of 77, the NBA announced Wednesday. Stern had emergency brain surgery after suffering a brain hemorrhage Dec. 12 while having lunch in New York. The league said Stern was surrounded by his wife, Dianne, and family. Stern spent 30 years as NBA commissioner and has remained affiliated with the league, holding the title of commissioner emeritus. NBA commish Adam Silver released the following statement: “For 22 years, I had a court-side seat to watch David in action. He was a mentor and one of my dearest friends. We spent countless hours in the office, at arenas, and on planes wherever the game would take us.
