Anwar El Ghazi is a Dutch professional football
player who plays for Premier League club Aston Villa and the Netherlands national team as a winger. He began his
professional football career from the youth system of his local club, BVV
Barendrecht. In 2006, he joined the youth academy of Feyenoord, but after two
years he left the club and made the remarkable step to the amateur club
Spartaan’20. Two years later he joined Sparta Rotterdam, for whom he played
four seasons. In 2013, he joined the Ajax Youth Academy. During the 2014-15 pre-season campaign he made 8 goals
in 150 minutes of playing time for the first team. Form his impressive
performances in pre-season he was prompted to Ajax’s first-team squad. He made
his regular-season debut for Ajax in the 2014-15 Eredivisie season opener against Vitesse. After some years,
on 31 January 2017, he moved to French Ligue 1 side Lille for a
€8 million transfer fee. After a year in Lille, he moved on loan to
Championship club Aston Villa, with a clause to buy included. Having a great
season and helped the team to promote back to the Premier League. On 10 June
2019, Villa signed him permanently for a four-year contract for an undisclosed
fee.
On the international level, he has represented the Dutch national
team at various age levels. Having dual citizenship, he was eligible to
represent either the Netherlands or Morocco at the senior
level. El Ghazi met Cristiano Ronaldo during the
summer break, a player who he looks up to, and asked him whether he should
represent the Netherlands or Morocco. Ronaldo advised him to choose the
Netherlands because he would have a higher chance to participate in an
international tournament, based on their history. On 15 October 2012, he made
his international debut playing for the Netherlands U18 side in a friendly match against Austria. On 10
October and 13 October 2015, he was called up for the Dutch national team to
play the two final UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying matches, against Kazakhstan and the Czech Republic.
