Arnab Ranjan Goswami, popularly known as Arnab Goswami is an Indian news anchor. He is the managing director and editor-in-chief of the Republic Media Network. Before starting his own network, he worked as editor-in-chief and news anchor for Times Now and ET Now. He also worked at NDTV and The Telegraph. He gained widespread fame while he anchored The Newshour on Times Now. He started Republic TV in May 2017. His network owns and operates two channels: Republic Tv in English and Republic Bharat in Hindi. However, Goswami has always received massive criticism for his opinionated reporting in support of BJP and Hindutva across a wide spectrum of situations.

Arnab Goswami was born on 7 March 1973. His birth name is Arnab Ranjan Goswami. His birth place is in Guwahati, Assam in India. He holds Indian nationality. He belongs to the Indian-Asian ethnicity. His religion is Hinduism and his zodiac sign is Libra. He was born to a father, Manoranjan Goswami, and a mother, Suprabha Gain-Goswami. After retiring from the Indian Army, his father joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. His father was BJP’s unsuccessful candidate in 1998 Lok Sabha Polls for the Guwahati constituency. His father wrote various columns and books. His father was awarded the Asam Sahitya Sabha Award in 2017. Goswami’s paternal grandfather, Rajani Kanta Goswami was a lawyer. His maternal grandfather, Gaurisankar Bhattacharyya was an elected legislator from the Communist Party of India who served as the leader of the opposition in Assam. He completed his 10th standard board exams from St Mary’s School in Delhi Cantonment. He completed his high school (12th standard board exams) from Kendriya Vidyalaya in Jabalpur Cantonment.  He then attended the Hindu College in Delhi University. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. He then obtained his Master’s degree in Social Anthropology from St. Antony’s College at Oxford University in 1994.

  • Arnab Goswami started working as a journalist with The Telegraph in Kolkata. 
  • He then moved to Delhi and joined NDTV in 1996.
  • He anchored daily newscasts including News Tonight and Newsnight. 
  • He won an award for the Best News Anchor of Asia 2004 in the 2004 Asian Television Awards. 
  • He worked at NDTV from 1996 to 2006. 
  • He left NDTV in 2006. He joined the newly-launched Times Now news channel. He joined the network as an editor-in-chief.

The FIR filed by the police include charges of giving provocation with intent to cause riot, promoting enmity between two groups on grounds of religion or race, deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs and defamation under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
  • He has been accused of opinionated reporting in support of Bharatiya Janata Party and Hindutva across a wide spectrum of situations. 
  • Parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor filed a civil defamation case in the Delhi High Court against Goswami and Republic TV in connection with the channel’s broadcast of news items from 8 to 13 May claiming his link in his wife Sunanda Pushkar’s death in 2014.
  • Goswami’s 30-second video clip about the flood-hit state of Kerala went viral on social media and stirred another controversy in August 2018. He purportedly called, “a group” the “most shameless bunch of Indians I have ever seen”.  
  • News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA) of India demanded Republic TV to tender a full-screen apology in August 2018 for use of multiple objectionable words to describe a bunch of people at a political rally, who were harassing one of his journalists. Republic TV “removed the video from its website and YouTube account”. However, RepublicTV never made public apology.
  • Goswami had confrontation with the Uddhav Thackeray government after two of RepublicTV staff were arrested in September 2020 for allegedly tresspassing on a farmhouse of Thackeray. 
  • Mumbai Police arrested Goswami on 4 November 2020 in connection in a 2018 suicide case of Anvay Naik under Section 306 and Section 34 of IPC. Naik had named Goswami among three individuals in his suicide note. The note named non payment of dues from them as the reason for committing suicide.
