Brian Ortega Career

Brian Ortega started training martial arts when he was just 5 years old. He started training at Al Martinez Muay Thai Kickboxing in Wilmington, California. He began training Brazilian jiu-jitsu at the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy under Rorion Gracie at age 13. Boxing coach James Luhrsen then trained Ortega in striking skills at age 17. 

Ortega began competing for regional promotions in Southern California. He won his first professional MMA championship, the Respect in The Cage featherweight Championship after defeating Carlos Garces via unanimous decision. He compiled an undefeated record of 8-0 before signing with the UFC. 

Ortega signed with the UFC in April 2014. His promotional debut against Diego Brandao in May 2014 was canceled after Brandao sustained an injury. He made his UFC debut at UFC on Fox 12 against Mike De La Torre on 26 July 2014. He won via first-round submission but the result was later changed to “No Contest” after Ortega tested positive for drostanolone during a post-fight screening. 

He returned from suspension to face Thiago Tavares at UFC Fight Night 68 in June 2015. He won the fight via TKO in the third round with both fighters earning Fight of the Night honors. He then defeated Brandao via triangle choke in the third round at UFC 195 in January 2016. 

He defeated Clay Guida via KO in the third round at UFC 199 in June 2016. He pulled out of the fight against Hacran Dias at UFC Fight Night 96 in October 2016. He defeated Renato Moicano at UFC 214 via submission in the third round where both the fighters were awarded the Fight of the Night bonus. 

At UFC Fight Night 123, he defeated Cub Swanson via guillotine choke submission in the second round. He earned both the Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night honors. He then defeated Frankie Edgar at UFC 222 via knockout in the first round in March 2018 which earned him the Performance of the Night bonus. He faced Max Holloway at UFC 231 in December 2018. He lost the fight by doctor stoppage at the end of the fourth round earning the Fight of the Night award. 

He defeated Chan Sung Jung via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night: Ortega vs. The Korean Zombie in October 2020. His fight for the UFC Featherweight Championship against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 260 was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols. The fight later took place at UFC 266 in September 2021. Ortega lost the fight via unanimous decision but earned the Fight of the Night award. 

He had to quit the fight at UFC on ABC 3 against Yair Rodriguez after he suffered a shoulder dislocation in the first round. He lost the fight via TKO.
