  • He started his profession as a swimmer.
  • He became a University of Georgia Bulldog in the fall of 2012. He made an immediate impact for Georgia, winning the 200-yard butterfly, 200-yard breaststroke, and 200-yard individual medley at his first collegiate meet, a tri-meet with North Carolina State and Savannah College of Art and Design. During that same year, he won the 400-meter individual medley at the 2012 AT&T Winter Nationals. He was also 3rd in the 200-meter individual medley and 8th in the 200 fly at that meet. 
  • At the 2013 World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona, he won silver in the 400-meter individual medley, finishing with a time of 4:09.22, which was half a second behind gold medal winner Daiya Seto of Japan. He also won the 400-yard individual medley at the 2013 NCAA Championships in Indianapolis as a freshman, finishing with a time of 3:38.05.

  • At the 2014 NCAA Division l Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships, he bettered his placement in the 200 IM touching 2nd (1:41.19), and broke the American record in the 400-yard individual medley previously held by Tyler Clary with a time of 3:34.50.
  • At the 2015 NCAA Championships, he swam the 200-yard individual medley, 400-yard individual medley and 200-yard butterfly. He came in 15th in the 200 IM, and was the runner-up in the 400 IM, upset on the back half of the race by rising talent Will Licon. After the meet, he announced that he would redshirt the 2015-2016 season in order to focus on the 2016 Olympic Trials. 
  • At the 2015 FINA World Champions, he earned a bronze medal behind Daiya Seto of Japan and David Verraszto of Hungary in a time of 4:10.05.
  • At the 2016 United States Olympic Trials, he qualified for the 2016 Olympic Team in the 400 Meter individual medley with a time of 4:09.54. He won silver in the 2016 Summer Olympics. 
  • During his senior year at Georgia, he won the 400-meter individual medley once again, breaking his own American record with a time of 3:33.41.
  • At the 2017 Phillips 66 National Championships in Indianapolis, he won both the 200 and 400 Meter individual medleys, earning himself a spot on the 2017 World Championship Team in those events. He also finished 3rd in the 200-meter butterfly, barely missing the World Championship team in that event.

  • At the 2017 FINA World Championships, he won gold in both of his events, setting a new Championship Record in the 400-meter individual medley in a time of 4:05.90, beating the previous record held by Michael Phelps set a decade before in Melbourne.
  • At the 2018 Phillips 66 National Championships, he won the 200-meter individual medley (1:55.73) and 400-meter individual medley (4:08.25) titles in Irvine, California where he also finished sixth in the 200 butterfly (1:55.42).
  • At the 2019 World Championships, to start his world championships, he touched for bronze in the 200 IM in a time of 1:56.78.
  • At the 2020 Olympics Trails, on the first day of the meet, he made the 2020 Olympic team in the 400-meter individual medley, winning the event in 4:09.09. He went on to make the team in the 200 IM as well, placing 2nd behind Michael Andrew.
  • At the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, he won his very first Olympic Gold, touching first in the men’s 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:09.42 on day two of competition which was the first medal for the United States at the Olympics Games. Before he won his gold medal, the United States had won no medals for the 2020 Olympics including no medals on day one of the competition, which was the longest the U.S. had gone without winning a single medal at an Olympic Games since 49 years earlier at the 1972 Summer Olympics.  
  • On the fifth day of competition, he ranked fourth overall with a time of 1:57.38 in the prelims heats of the 200-meter individual medley and qualified for the semifinals.
