Early life and education

B. was raised an only child in New York City, by his father who was a taxi driver and his mother who worked at a local market as a cashier – as the family had barely enough money to pay rent and put food on the table, D. B. promised to himself that he would focus on his education and one day help his parents.

While attending high school, D. B. took his girlfriend to a theatre play, which is when he became interested in acting, and soon started practicing his acting skills at the same theatre. He was also physically active during his teenage years, as he played basketball and had several training sessions at the gym each week.

Upon matriculation in 1987, he enrolled at the State University of New York at Albany, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1991, then continued his education at the Yale School of Drama, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1993.

Roles in TV series

DB has been credited with over 50 appearances in movies and TV series, and we are about to mention some of his most notable performances in this article.

He made his debut TV series appearance in 1996, when he also portrayed his first lead character – Aaron Mosely – in the crime mystery drama “Murder One”, also starring Mary McCormack, Michael Hayden and J. C. MacKenzie, and which follows the defense attorney Theodore Hoffman who has to defend Neil Avedon, a famous actor who is addicted to drugs and alcohol and has been charged with murder. The year 2001 saw him star as Daniel Reide in six episodes of the crime mystery drama “The Division”, which follows the lives of five policewomen working in San Francisco, and in 2002, DB began portraying Principal Robin Wood in the critically acclaimed action fantasy drama “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. He played the supporting character Tyrone in Tina Mabry’s drama “Mississippi Damned” in 2009, and was then invited to appear in the drama “Back” in 2009, the thriller “The Inheritance” (both a critical and financial failure) in 2011, and the crime action comedy “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” in 2015.

Two of his most recent roles in movies have been in the crime thriller drama “The Man in 3B” in 2015, which starred Lamman Rucker and Christian Keyes, and the short comedy “Smile” in which he starred alongside Kevin Alejandro and Emerson Basco in 2019.

Love life and wife

DB met his the famous American actress Golden Brooks in 2006, on the set of a TV series they were both cast to appear in, and they started dating days later – Brooks is today known for her roles in the series “Girlfriends” and the movie “The Darkest Minds”, while she has also become a screenwriter and producer.

On 1 September 2009, Brooks gave birth to their daughter Dakota Tao Brooks-Woodside, and rumors started circulating the internet about how Brooks had become DB’s wife exchanging their vows in secret, however, both of them denied the rumors, but then split in the following year.

DB hasn’t talked about any other women he might have been with before he met Brooks. or after their split, and as of September 2020 he is single, hasn’t married and has a daughter.

Hobbies and other interests

One of DB’s hobbies is being active on his Instagram account, as he’s uploaded over 520 pictures, and has over 1.5 million people currently following him on the popular network.

He is a lover of animals, and is at the moment fostering a dog, Mia who has been left without a home as her past owners welcomed a baby, and Mia has too much energy for the family now – DB has helped many other dogs such as Mia find permanent homes.

He is a supporter of the movement Black Lives Matter, and has walked several peaceful protests – he is also a philanthropist and has donated money to several charity foundations and organizations.

DB has his own favorite actors and actresses, some of whom are Denzel Washington, Will Smith and Rosario Dawson, and some of his favorite movies are “I Am Legend”, “I, Robot” and “Seven Pounds”.
