The American television personality and author, Phillip McGraw, better known as Dr. Phil, is popular for hosting the television show ‘Dr. Phil’ along with his wife, Robin McGraw. McGraw was born on 1 September 1950, in Vinita, Oklahoma, to parents Joseph J. McGraw Jr. and his wife, Anne Geraldine (Jerry). When he was a kid, his family moved because his father wanted to become a psychologist, lifelong. He grew up in the oilfields of North Texas along with two older sisters, Deana and Donna, and younger sister Brenda.
McGraw completed high school from Shawnee Mission North High School in Overland Park, Kansas. In 1968, he was awarded a football scholarship to the University of Tulsa, where he played middle linebacker under Coach Glenn Dobbs. Later, he was transferred to Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, after the retirement of Coach Dobbs. From the university, he graduated in 1975 with a B.A. in psychology.
In 1976, he went on to join the University of North Texas from where he received M.A in experimental psychology. Then a Ph.D. degree in clinical psychology in 1979. After getting his doctorate, he joined his father’s private psychology practice in Wichita Falls, Texas.

After working with his father, in 1983, both father and son worked with a successful Texas businesswoman, Thelma Box. Together, they presented ‘Pathways’ seminars and training, focused on individuals to achieve their own results for eight years. During 1988, the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists investigated him for hiring a former patient. However, the board closed its complaint file in June 1990 after not finding the claims. But, he lost his license to practice psychology in the nation because of involving in several controversies and charges for having inappropriate contact with patients.
In 1990, he co-founded a trial consulting firm ‘Courtroom Sciences, Inc after joining lawyer Gary Dobbs through which he came to contact Oprah Winfrey. Later in 1995, Winfrey hired his legal consulting firm CSI to prepare her for the Amarillo Texas beef trial. In 1999, he established his first best-selling book ‘Life Strategies’. Followed by his other three best-selling books on relationships.
Furthermore, in 2003, he worked in the weight loss business where he began to sell shakes, energy bars, and supplements. His family members like his sisters Deana and Brenda and nephew Tony to promote these products. Before that, he founded the Peteski Production company and started his own daily television show, ‘Dr. Phil’ in September.

Since 1976, he is married to Robin Jo Jamesonwho is also a philanthropist, author, and television personality like him. She began to get fame after appearing on his husband’s show ‘Dr. Phil’. Together, the couple had welcomed two sons: Jay and Jordan McGraw. His son Jay has walked in the footsteps of his father and published a book based on his father’s book: targeted at teenagers. Further, Jay married to one of the Dahm Triplets, Erica Dahm. And his younger son Jordan is a musician.
However, this is not the first time he has been in a marital relationship. Before, he has married his college sweetheart, Debbie Higgins McCall in 1970. But their relationship lasted for only three years and got separated in 1973. Further, Debbie claimed that Phil was dominating and never allowed her to participate in the family business.

In 2006, Deepak Kalpoe and his brother Satish Kalpoe filed a lawsuit against McGraw in relation to the disappearance of Natalee Holloway. The case was dismissed on 17 March 2015.
