  • Mertens started his youth career from the local club, Stade Leuven in 1996.
  • Anderlecht scouts spotted Mertens and signed him to their youth academy in 1998. 
  • He spent 5 years at the club’s academy. The club released him in 2003 as he was too short and physically incapable of competing at a professional level.
  • Belgian Pro League club, Gent signed him in 2003.
  • After spending 2 years at Gent’s academy, the club loaned him to the Belgian Third Division club, Endracht Aalst in 2005 for the 2005-06 season.  
  • Following the end of the 2005-06 season, Gent loaned Mertens to the Dutch club, AGOVV Apeldoorn.
