How did he die?

Erik died on 11 February 2013 at his home, after losing a three-year fight against cancer.

A day later, around 500 people gathered in the Erik Cassel Memorial, and many were seen dressed up as his Roblox character to pay their respects. Roblox sold his ‘Official Erik Shirt’ for the following eight days, and they renamed a hat called ‘Well Worn Hat’ to ‘Erik Cassel’s Hat’. The description of the mentioned item today reads: ‘To honor our co-founder Erik Cassel, Roblox will make a substantial contribution to cancer research in Erik’s name. Thank you to everyone for your respect and support.’

Early life and education

Erik was raised alongside his siblings in California, by their father who was a factory worker, and their mother who was a housewife.

He grew up dreaming about becoming an actor, but fell in love with computing while attending high school, and became interested in programming. He was mostly focused on learning the basics, but was also interested in sports, as he played soccer for the school’s team. After matriculating from high school in 1985, he enrolled at Cornell University, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1989.

Erik’s career and Roblox

Not long after graduation, Erik was invited to join the company Knowledge Revolution, which was founded by his friend David Baszucki and David’s brother Greg – the three worked at the company side by side before it was sold to MSC Software in December 1998, for $20 million.

In 2004, Erik and David created the beta version of Roblox, which was initially meant to be called DynaBlocks. The name was changed a year later, and after two years of running tests and writing the platform, Roblox was officially released on 1 September 2006 – the platform became compliant with The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 in March 2007. Roblox’s first Hack Week was held in December 2011 during which game developers presented their ideas to Erik and David – it was released for iOS on 11 December 2012, as well as for Android on 16 July 2014. On 20 November 2015, Roblox was introduced to Xbox One, and in April 2016 they created Roblox VR with the use of Oculus Rift.

Most recently, in July 2020 it was announced that Roblox would be creating a place for ‘online hangout’ called Party Place.

Some of the most popular games on Roblox are “Adopt Me!”, “Murder Mystery 2” and “Welcome to Bloxburg”. Roblox has won four awards and accolades – it was named one of the America’s fastest-growing private companies by the business magazine “Inc.” in 2016, and won a San Mateo County Economic Development Association (SAMCEDA) Award of Excellence in 2017, as well as a San Francisco Business Times’ Tech & Innovation Award – Gaming/eSports in the same year.

Most recently, in 2020 Roblox was named #1 in the gaming category on the ‘World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies’ list, compiled by the business magazine “Fast Company”, and #9 in the overall category.

Love life and wife

Erik was very secretive when it came to his love life and other personal matters, and avoided talking about his wife and children, but it’s known that he was a family man. A strange thing happened in May 2014 when Erik’s Roblox character Erik.cassel was seen online by many people – at first, people believed that his account was hacked, while others claimed that his brother had logged in, but people eventually came to a conclusion that one of his kids was using the account.

Erik’s children are also said to be interested in programming, and are about to follow in their father’s footsteps.

Eric didn’t talk about any women he might had dated before meeting his wife – he didn’t talk about where or when he met her, either – at the time of his death, he was a married man with more than one child.

Hobbies and other interests

Erik usually spent all of his free time with his wife and kids, in the family circle, especially after learning about Erik’s cancer.

He was into outdoor activities, and one of his favorite things to do was to go fishing either alone or with a couple of his best friends.

Erik liked to travel, and visited many US states, although he preferred to travel overseas to Europe and Asia – a couple of his favorite places to visit were Switzerland due to its beautiful mountains, and Italy because of its amazing coastline.

He was an avid snow-skier, and preferred to spend his free time up in the mountains rather than down at the beach.

Erik was also a fan of movies, and a few of his favorite actors and actresses were Richard Gere, Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, while a couple of his favorite movies were “Hachiko: A Dog’s Tale”, “Sleepless in Seattle” and “Notting Hill”.

Age and height

Erik was 45 at the time of his death. He had short brown hair and blue eyes, his height was 5ft 8ins (1.73m) and he weighed around 150lbs (68kgs).

At the time of his death, his net worth was estimated at over $20 million.
