Early life and education

Erik was raised as a single child in Worcester by his father Fred who is a businessman, and his mother Ann who is originally from Sweden, and who received her American citizenship in 2007. Erik spent a lot of his time growing up in Sweden, where he learned a bit of their language, and today he and his family visit Sweden at least once a year.

He grew up being interested in sports, took taekwondo lessons and today holds a first degree black belt. Erik was also interested in music, and began taking piano and saxophone lessons while attending a public high school in Worcester, while he also played football and tennis.

He launched his acting career while he was still attending elementary, school and then after matriculating from high school decided to study at the University of Southern California, while simultaneously working on his acting career. He also worked on his acting skills at Phillips Exeter Academy and Mount Saint Charles Academy.

Career as an actor

Erik made his debut film appearance in the science fiction film “Armageddon” in 1998, which starred Liv Tyler, Bruce Willis, and Ben Affleck and was a huge commercial success. In 1999, Erik portrayed Fuzzy in the drama film “The Cider House Rules”, which follows Homer Wells who is living in the US after World War II.

He made his debut TV series appearance in the episode “Pilot” of “Wonderland” in 2000, and then became famous worldwide after being invited to portray Dewey Wilkerson in the sitcom “Malcolm in the Middle”, shooting for it from 2000 to 2006.

The show starred Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston and Justin Berfield, and follows a teenager who is living with his strange family.
