Early life, parents and education

Fredricka was raised an only child in Honolulu by her father Mal Whitfield, who was an American athlete, airman and a goodwill ambassador, and who might best be known for having been the Olympic Champion in the 800 meters race in both 1948 and 1952 – Fredricka’s mother was a housewife who preferred not to be in the media.

Fredricka was very close to her parents, and was there by his side when Mal died on 18 November 2015.

Fredricka studied at Paint Branch High School located in Burtonsville in Maryland, and it was there that she became interested in journalism – she wrote several articles for the school’s newspapers and was encouraged by her teachers to pursue a career in journalism. After matriculation in 1983, Fredricka enrolled at Howard University’s School of Communications, and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1987.

Fredricka launched her career while still attending Howard, as she worked at WHUR, campus’ radio station, as their news anchor.

Career as a journalist

After obtaining her degree, Fredricka joined WPLG-TV where she served as an anchor, requiring her to move to Miami in Florida, which then became one of her favorite cities in the US. After spending over a year there, she moved to Washington, D. C. when invited to work for News Channel 8.

Fredricka spent around two years with News Channel 8, before moving to KTVT-TV in Dallas, Texas, and then became somewhat addicted to travelling and started searching for work in other states after less than a year in Dallas.

She eventually found work in New Haven, Connecticut, and started working at WTNH as their news anchor, staying there for a year before moving to Charleston in South Carolina to start working at WCIV virtual channel 36. She became somewhat popular in the US in 1995, when she became a correspondent for “NBC Nightly News”, and she kept the job for the following six years, while she also occasionally contributed to several other NBC programs, including the news and morning talk show “Today”.

In 2002, Fredricka joined CNN (Cable News Network), one of the most popular networks in the US, launched in 1980 by Ted Turner, a media proprietor and philanthropist, and Reese Schonfeld who was a journalist and a TV executive.

It was the first channel which provided news 24/7 and its headquarters can today be found in Atlanta, Georgia.

On 13 June 2015, Fredricka talked about the man who fired at police in Dallas, describing him as ‘courageous and brave’ – two days later, she apologized on-air stating how she misused the words and was sorry because of it; it is widely believed that Fredricka apologized only because her network forced her to.

Husband John Glenn

Fredricka met her future other half John Glenn not long after graduating from college, and they dated for around 10 years before marrying in a private ceremony in 1999, attended by their closest friends and family. Her husband is also a journalist and is a photographer, who is today working for the major daily newspaper The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) as their director of photography. In January 2005, Fredricka gave birth to their son, and in November 2012, to their twins Nola and Gilbert. The family of five is leading a seemingly happy life together in Atlanta.

Fredricka hasn’t talked about any other men she might have been with before meeting John, and as of September 2020, she is married and has three children.

Hobbies and other interests

Fredricka isn’t a fan of social media networks, and believes that this has only disconnected people although it was initially meant to connect them – she isn’t active on Instagram but has a Twitter account which she is expected to have as she is a journalist.
