What does ‘strongman’ mean?

The word was used in the 19th century for the first time and it referred to circus performers who could perform random ‘feats of strength’, including lifting, pushing or pulling extremely heavy objects – today, it stands for those competing in strength athletics.

Childhood and education

Brian was raised alongside his sister Juli by their father Jay and mother Bonnie Shaw – both Brian’s parents were quite tall while his uncles are said to have had ‘exceptional stature’.

Brian attended Fort Lupton High School, at which he was interested in basketball and played for the school’s team. Upon matriculating in 2000, he enrolled at Otero Junior College located in La Junta in Colorado, at which he excelled at basketball, and was thus invited to move to Black Hills State University on a basketball scholarship – he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in wellness management in 2004.

While attending college, Brian spent most of his spare time at the gym lifting weights, which is how he eventually became interested in becoming a strongman.

Career as a strongman

He officially became a strongman in October 2005, after entering the Denver Strongest Man competition without any formal training – seven months later, Brian became a professional strongman, and started attracting attention in the field.

It was in 2009 that he entered the now-defunct event Fortissimus, in which many men competed to win the title of ‘The Strongest Man on Earth’ – that year the event was held in Canada, and Brian finished third, while he was the only one capable of lifting all six Atlas stones which weighed between 300 and 425lbs (136 to 193kgs).

In November, Brian won the Jon Pall Sigmarsson Classic strongman competition, and then on 18 December won the Strongman Super series Swedish Grand Prix.

He finally beat Zyndrunas in 2011, at World’s Strongest Man and then beat him again two years later as well as in 2015 and 2016.

The year 2017 saw him win the Arnold Strongman Classic and finish 3rd at World’s Strongest Man. In March 2018, he entered the Arnold Strongman Classic, and finished 2nd, 3.5 points behind Hafthor Bjornsson. In October of the same year, Brian entered the World’s Ultimate Strongman held in Dubai, The United Arab Emirates and lost to Hafthor again.
