Life before Fame

Astrid Menks spent her early years in Latvia. There, she was raised by her parents, however, there is no information about their names and professions. She has both Latvian and American nationality, and belongs to the White Caucasian ethnic group. At one point of her life, Astrid decided to move to the United States in order to pursue her career. She settled down in Omaha, Nebraska, and started working as a cocktail waitress at a local bar.

Susan moved to San Francisco to pursue her singing career in 1977. Before that, she introduced Warren to Astrid and other girls who worked there, to take care of him. So, Warren continued to visit the bar and soon became romantically involved in a relationship with Astrid. After dating for a year, they started living together. Susan knew about them and was at peace with their relationship.; they even used to appear together at various events holding each other’s hands. Obviously, their relationship was quite complex since the two women shared Warren. He never divorced Susan, and remained with her until her death in 2004. Two years after Susan’s passing, Warren married Astrid.

He was soon spotted by businessman Benjamin Graham, and started working in his company, Graham-Newman Corp. in the position of a securities analyst until 1956, when the company closed as Benjamin retired.

At that time, Warren had over $174,000 of personal savings (approximately $1.47 million today), so he established his own partnership, called Buffett Partnership Ltd. As time passed, his company steadily expanded, so he began operating three partnerships, and by the end of the decade Warren was operating seven. Over the next five years his partnerships made over 250% in profit, which enormously increased his personal capital, so by 1962 Warren was a millionaire.

Berkshire Hathaway

Thereafter, Warren Buffett started investing in the textile manufacturing company, Berkshire Hathaway Inc., buying shares from the owner Seabury Stanton for $7.60 per share and over the next year his assets increased exponentially so that he eventually took over the company, fired Stanton and named Ken Chace to run the company. During the 1960s, Warren turned the business to the sector of insurance. In 1970 he took over as the CEO and Chairman, and by the end of the decade, the company had shares valued at $1,310. In 1985 the company was sold, then Warren became a billionaire in 1990, when the company sold his Class A shares worth $7,175 each, but he still owns around 300,000 Class A shares of the company.

Other Business Ventures

Warren Buffett has also invested in a number of other companies. In 1987, he became the largest shareholder of Salomon Inc., and took it over. One of his best investments came in the following year, when he started buying shares of the Coca-Cola Company. He has also invested in the Washington Post Company, the Sanborn Map Company, General Electric Company, and the railroad company Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation, among many others. He is also the author of “The Essays Of Warren Buffett: Lessons For Corporate America” (2001).

Charity Work

Warren Buffett is also known as a philanthropist – he’s stated that he will donate 83% of his fortune to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; he also runs his own charitable Buffett Foundation. In December 2010, he co-created “The Giving Pledge”, along with Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, inviting rich people to donate at least half of their fortune to charities, as they had done.
