Early life and education

XQc was raised in Laval alongside his brother Nicolas – their parents divorced when xQc was only a year old, after which the boys spent equal time with their mother and their father.

XQc grew up being interested in various sports, his two favorites being skateboarding and snowboarding – knowing that these sports are dangerous, his parents agreed to let him skateboard and snowboard only if he wore his knee pads and helmets. At around the same time, xQc became interested in playing video games, and often played against his peers.

Upon matriculating in 2013, xQc enrolled at the post-secondary pre-university collegiate technical college CEGEP at which he studied humanities, but then switched to administration – he dropped out just before graduation to focus on his career as a gamer and Twitch streamer.

Career as a professional gamer

XQc initially wanted to play the video game “League of Legends”, and mostly livestreamed it on Twitch, however, after learning about “Overwatch”, he began playing that instead, and soon found himself competing with and against professional e-Sport players.

He started off by playing for the semi-professional team DatZit Gaming as their main tank, and on 13 August 2016, the boys won the Dreamhack Montreal 2016 Overwatch tournament. XQc left the team not long afterwards, and moved to the team Q?, which was on 12 October 2016 bought by Denial eSports, a former professional e-Sports organization based in the US.

Denial failed to pay its players, and as xQc has stated, they owed them $2,800 each when the team disbanded. The boys went on to form their own team, calling themselves YIKES! before changing it to Arc.6 – they qualified to compete in Season Zero of Overwatch Contenders, but lost during the group stage. Their final tournament together was the Beat Invitational: Season 2 which they finished in third place.

It was announced on 28 October 2017 that xQc would be joining Dallas Fuel as their ninth player, and he played several matches before it was revealed that he had made homophobic remarks towards Austin ‘Muma’ Wilmot, a rival playing for the Houston Outlaws, during one of his Twitch streams, and was thus fined $2,000 and suspended for several matches.

The suspension was later extended, but xQc eventually returned and led Dallas Fuel to victory against the Los Angeles Gladiators. Not long afterwards, he was suspended once again for social media violations, and then announced that he was going to retire and focus solely on being a Twitch streamer. However, xQc changed his mind, and joined the team GOATS, then moved to Gladiators Legion on 2 February 2019, but left in late 2019.

He has also entered international tournaments with Team Canada, and was in 2017 named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), however, Team Canada still lost in the finals against South Korea, the defending champion – in 2018, the team reached the quarterfinals, while they failed to pass the group stage in July 2019.
