Childhood and education
Jason was raised alongside his brother Joel Desrouleaux in Miramar by his parents, who had moved to Florida from Haiti not long before he was born.
Jason was only four when he became interested in singing, and after noticing this, his mother enrolled him at a music school.
He went on to attend several schools of the performing arts in Florida, and was eight when he wrote his first song. Jason attracted attention with his lyrics during his teenage years, and at that time wrote the song “Bossy” for the American rapper Birdman. He was also physically quite active while attending high school, as he played various sports but eventually decided to entirely focus on music. Upon matriculation in 2007, Jason chose not to pursue a college degree, but to focus on his music career.
Career as a singer
He started writing songs for famous musicians while still attending high school, some of whom were Diddy, Donnie Klang and Lil Wayne, and became decisive about launching his career as a singer.
He practiced his skills at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy, and also did a some acting, appearing in the theatre plays “Smokey Joe’s Café” and “Ragtie”. In 2006 he entered the music competition show “Showtime at the Apollo”, winning the grand prize, and was then signed to both Warner Bros. Records and Beluga Heights Records, after being noticed by the record producer Jonathan Reuven Rotem.
His debut single came out on 4 August 2009 entitled “Whatcha Say”, which reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, his only single to date to achieve that; his second single “In My Head” peaked at #5 on the chart.
He released his first, self-titled album on 2 March 2010, and it reached the top ten on charts in Ireland and the UK. His second album, “Future History” came out on 27 September 2011, while its lead single “Don’t Wanna Go Home” topped the charts in the UK, and peaked at #5 on an Australian chart.
Jason’s new single – “The Other Side” – came out on 16 April 2013, and it peaked at #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, and not long after on 24 September, he released his third studio album “Tattoos” – the single “Talk Dirty” from the album reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. His fourth album, “Everything Is 4” came out on 9 March 2015, and it reached #5 on the chart and peaked at #1 on the UK Singles Chart.
Jason went on to release his half-album “Side 1”, the first part of his two-part album “2Sides”, on 8 November 2019, while the album’s second part was to be released by the end of 2020, however, as he left Warner Bros. Records, its release has been postponed indefinitely.
Acting career
Jason is also a bit of an actor, as he portrayed Ronald Dawson in the episode “Surf ‘N’ Turf” of the buddy cop action comedy series “Lethal Weapon” in 2016, and in 2019 he played Rum Tum Tugger in the musical fantasy movie “Cats”, but which received poor reviews.

Jason has been nominated for over 40 awards for his music, and has won nine.
He won his first two Teen Choice Awards for Choice R&B Track and Choice R&B Album in 2010, and then won two Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) Pop Music Awards for Songwriter of the Year and 50 Most Performed Songs of the Year in 2011. The year 2014 saw him win a Teen Choice Award for Choice Music: Male Star, as well as a Los Premios 40 Principales Award, and in 2015, he won a YouTube Music Award for 50 Artists to Watch.
In 2016, Jason was awarded a LOS40 Music Award for Lo + 40 Artist and most recently in 2017, he won a CMT Music Award for CMT Performance of the Year.
