Dirk was raised in Wurzburg by his father Jorg-Werner who was a handball player for the German national team, and his mother Helga Bredenbrocker who was a basketball player as well. Dirk has an older sister named Silke who competed in track and field before becoming a basketball player. He started playing tennis and handball while still at elementary school, but after being motivated by his parents and teachers, he switched to basketball, partly because he grew to 2.13m. Dirk was 15 when he started playing for the local team DJK Wurzburg, and was then noticed by the famous coach Holger Geschwidner who offered to teach him 2-3 times a week.

He joined the Dallas Mavericks in 1998, however, he was first chosen by Milwaukee Bucks who soon traded him to the Mavericks. The first season was poor for Dirk as Mavericks lost 31 out of 50 games. In 1999, the Mavericks were bought by Mark Cuban for $280 million and Mark invested in the team which led to them improving their results, and in 2000, they reached the play-offs for the first time in ten years. Dirk became the second highest paid German athlete right behind Michael Schumacher, a former Formula One motor-racing world champion. Dirk stayed with the Mavericks until after the 2018-2019 season when he retired.

Dirk’s sister Silke has described him as ‘a confident but low-key character, unspoiled by money and fame.

He enjoys reading and playing the saxophone’. Dirk is interested in doing charity work, and is the founder of the Dirk Nowitzki Foundation which is helping poor people living in Africa.
