Early life and education

Lara was raised with two older sisters, Cindy and Sharon, in Allentown by their father who was the owner of a factory which produces pajamas, and their mother who was a housewife.

Lara grew up being interested in acting, and appeared in many school plays organized at her elementary school, however, after enrolling at William Allen High School and after being talked into it by her parents, she became interested in law, and upon matriculation enrolled at New York University, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in 1989. She continued her education at Fordham’s School of Law, obtaining her Master’s degree, while she has also taken her Bar Exam in three US states, passing all. She was an attorney before deciding to quit and focus on her acting career.

Concurrently with her studies, Lara launched her acting career in 1981 by portraying the lead character Samantha ‘Sam’ Kanisky in the comedy TV series “Gimme a Break!” which also stars Nell Carter and Kari Michaelsen, and follows a chief of police whose wife dies and who is now seeking comfort and help from her best friend. Lara was shooting for it until the show ended in 1987.

In 1986, she starred as Courtney in the romantic comedy film “Touch and Go”, while she joined the live action comedy sketch “The Amanda Show” in 1999, and was a member of the main cast until 2002.
