The versatile actor was born on 4 October 1967 as Isaac Liev Schreiber in San Francisco, California, the USA. He was born as the son of Heather and Tell Carroll Schreiber, actor and director. He has a mixed ethnicity of Protestant and Jewish descent. His family moved to Canada when he was one year. He had a troublesome childhood because their parents fought for the custody battle over him while he was four. After a year, his parents divorced got divorced and he went with his mother. He has a half-brother Pablo Scheiber from his father second marriage. And also have half-siblings from his mother side.

He grew up in poverty in a cold-water apartment in Manhattan. Further, his mother worked as a cab driver and made papier-mache puppets, for their living. While growing up, he has endured his mother’s mood swings and bohemian proclivities. Moreover, his mother made him wear yoga shirts and forced to go to an ashram school in Connecticut at the age of twelve. Also, he was forbidden to watch color movies, as a result, for a long time his favorites were Charlie Chaplin and Basil Rathbone.
