Who is Martin Freeman?

British actor Martin John Christopher Freeman was born in Aldershot, Hampshire, England, on 8 September 1971, making Virgo his zodiac sign. He’s had roles in close to 100 TV series and movies, but is perhaps known best for playing Everett K. Ross in the critically acclaimed 2018 action science fiction adventure movie “Black Panther”, which Ryan Coogler wrote and directed, and which starred Michael B Jordan and the late Chadwick Boseman. It follows the leader of Wakanda T’Challa as he’s trying to secure a future for his people, and the movie won 117 of its 399 award nominations, including three Oscar wins for Best Achievement in Production Design, Best Achievement in Costume Design and Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Score).

Education and early life

Martin was raised in Aldershot alongside his four older siblings, by their father Geoffrey Freeman who was a naval officer, and mother Philomena (nee Norris) who was a housewife; Philomena and Geoffrey divorced before Martin turned five, and Geoffrey died from a heart attack when Martin was 10. His grandfather Leonard W. Freeman served with the British Expeditionary Force during Second World War as a medic, and died during the battle of Dunkirk.

Martin studied at Salesian School and became interested in acting during his four years there, appearing in a number of plays performed at the school; he was also into singing, but eventually chose acting over it.

He matriculated in 1990 and then began attending Brooklands College, but eventually transferred to the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 1994.

Roles in TV series

Martin made his debut TV series appearance in the 1997 episode “Man Trap” of the crime drama “The Bill”, and the same year saw him play Stuart in the episode “Last Tango in Southwark” of the drama “This Life”; he had only two other TV series roles in the ‘90s, appearing in an episode of the dramas “Casualty” and “Picking up the Pieces”.

From 2001 through 2003, he played one of the main characters Tim Canterbury in 14 episodes of the critically acclaimed comedy “The Office”, which Ricky Gervais created as well as starred in; it follows the lives of a group of office workers whose company is about to be closed, and the series won 24 of its 42 award nominations.

Martin’s also known for playing the lead character Mike in all 12 episodes of the comedy “Hardware” (2003-2004), created by Simon Nye, and which also starred Peter Serafinowicz and Ken Morley. It follows a group of people who are employed at a hardware store, and the series won one of its three award nominations. The remainder of the 2000s saw Martin appear in the comedy “The Robinsons”, another comedy “Comedy Showcase” and the fantasy comedy mini-series “Boy Meets Girl”.

From 2010 through 2017, Martin starred alongside Benedict Cumberbatch and Una Stubbs in the hit crime mystery “Sherlock”, created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, and which follows a detective and his partner as they’re solving crimes in London, England; the series won 93 of its 276 award nominations.

Some of Martin’s most recent TV series roles have been in five episodes of the 2022 crime thriller “The Responder”, three episodes of the 2022 biographical mini-series “Angelyne” and 20 episodes of the comedy “Breeders” since 2020 (lead role).

Roles in movies

Martin’s debut film role was starring as Frank in the 1998 short drama “I Just Want to Kiss You”, and some of his following roles were in the 2000 drama “The Low Down”, the 2001 drama “Men Only” and the 2001 short comedy “Fancy Dress”.

The year 2002 saw him appear in the hit comedy “Ali G Indahouse”, which Sacha Baron Cohen wrote, as well as starred in; the film follows the life of not-so-smart gangsta-wannabe Ali G. The following year saw Martin appear in three movies: the crime thriller “The Debt”, the romantic comedy “Love Actually” and the comedy “Margery and Gladys”.

The year 2009 saw him star as Chris Curry in the biographical drama “Micro Men”, directed by Saul Metzstein, and which also starred Alexander Armstrong and Edward Baker-Duly; it follows the life of British inventor Clive Sinclair. Some of Martin’s following notable performances were in the 2011 romantic comedy “Swinging with the Finkels”, the 2012 short animated comedy “So You Want to Be a Pirate!” (voice role) and the 2012 fantasy “Animals”.

Martin starred as Bilbo in the critically acclaimed 2012 adventure fantasy “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, which Peter Jackson directed, and which also starred Ian McKellen and Richard Armitage. It follows hobbit Bilbo Baggins as he’s travelling with a group of dwarves to their former mountain home, and the film won 11 of its 86 award nominations, including three Oscar nominations for Best Achievement in Production Design, Best Achievement in Visual Effects and Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling. Martin reprised his role as Bilbo in the 2013 sequel “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” and the 2014 sequel “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies”.

He starred as Charlie in the 2019 romantic comedy “Ode to Joy”, directed by Jason Winer, and which also starred Morena Baccarin and Jake Lacy. It follows the life of Charlie whose neurological disorder makes him faint when experiencing strong emotions, and the film won two awards.

Martin’s since had roles in two other movies: the 2020 animated drama “A Christmas Carol” (voice role) and the 2022 action adventure “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”; he’s currently shooting for four upcoming movies, including “Miller’s Girl” and “Queen of Bones”.

Other credits

Martin received special thanks for the 2013 documentary movie “Completing the Golden Mile: The Making of ‘World’s End’”.

He produced the 2015 musical documentary film “Tubby Hayes: A Man in a Hurry”, the 2018 documentary movie “John Simons: A Modernist” and the 2020 short film “The Little Giant”, while he both wrote and produced 30 episodes of the comedy series “Breeders”, which has been airing since 2020.

Some of his most recent talk-show appearances have been in “Celebrity Page”, “The One Show” and “The Jonathan Ross Show”.

Awards and nominations

Martin’s won 11 of his 55 award nominations. Some of his wins include a 2011 BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actor, a 2012 Crime Thriller Dagger Award for Best Supporting Actor and a 2014 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie, all for his performance in “Sherlock”.

Love life and relationships

Martin avoids speaking about his love life in public, and there’s only a single woman whom he’s been with, that his fans know about.

From 2000 through 2016, Martin was in a relationship with famous British actress Amanda Abbington, who’s appeared in close to 80 movies and TV series, and is perhaps known best for playing Mary Watson in seven episodes of the series Sherlock from 2014 through 2017; she and Martin have appeared together in a number of other TV series and films, including “The All Together”, “The Robinsons” and “The Debt”.

Amanda gave birth to their son Joe in 2006, and their daughter Grace followed in 2008; even though Amanda and Martin split in 2016, they’re today equally involved in raising their children.

Martin seems to be unattached as of May 2023, he was once in a long-term relationship with Amanda Abbington, and has two children with her.

Although once deeply religious, Martin’s revealed that he’s no longer a practicing Catholic.

One of his closest friends is famous British actor and comedian Simon John Pegg.

Martin’s a huge fan of British singer-songwriter Paul John Weller.

He loves jazz and soul music.

Martin’s brother Jamie Freeman was a singer-songwriter and record producer, who died from brain cancer on 3 December 2022.

He’s been a supporter of the Labour Party since his teenage years.

He was 44 when he earned his driver’s license in 2016.
