Who is Anne Hathaway?

Anne Jacqueline Hathaway was born in Brooklyn, New York City USA on 12 November 1982, so her zodiac sign is Scorpio and she holds American nationality.

She is an actress, perhaps best known for her roles in “Devil Wears Prada” in 2006 and in “One Day” in 2011. She was raised with two brothers named Michael and Thomas partially in the Brooklyn, by her mother Kate who was an actress, and her father Gerald who was an attorney. The family moved to Short Hills, Millburn, New Jersey when she was six years old, the same year that she saw her mother perform as Fantine in the play “Les Miserables”, and then expressed her wish to become an actress herself. However, her parents were against it, and her mother decided to stop acting and focus on raising her children. So Anne grew up wanting to become a nun, and was close to the church, but after finding out that her brother Michael was gay and the church’s attitude to such a situation, her beliefs and interests changed.

She enrolled at Brooklyn Heights Montessori School, later switching to Wyoming Elementary School in Millburn and upon finishing it, she began attending Millburn High School, playing soccer for the school’s team and appearing in most of the school’s plays. After she matriculated, Anne enrolled at New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study, but left to pursue her acting career.

She had her first lead roles in the Disney films “The Princess Diaries” and “The Other Side of Heaven” in 2001. Her next notable role was in 2005 in the drama film “Brokeback Mountain” in which she starred alongside Heath Ledger and Jake Hyllenhaal.

She was the star of the comedy film “The Devil Wears Prada” released in 2006, and in 2010 she starred in the romantic comedy film “Valentine’s day” alongside Ashton Kutcher. She was invited to play a lead role in the romantic drama film called “Love & Other Drugs” the same year, and in 2011 she portrayed Emma Morley in the romantic comedy film “One Day”.

It is widely believed that her best performance was in the film “Les Miserables” in 2012, in which she portrayed Fantine, the same role she’d been so impressed by her mother playing it. For the role she had to lose 11kgs, cut her hair, and learn about prostitution. Later, “The Washington Post” wrote ‘the centerpiece of a movie composed entirely of centerpieces belongs to Anne Hathaway, who as the tragic heroine Fantine, sings another of the memorable numbers’.

Some of her latest roles have been in the film “Ocean’s 8” in 2018, “Serenity” in 2019, and in “The Last Thing He Wanted” in 2020. Anne is a philanthropist, and has worked with underprivileged children such as those in Nicaragua helping to get them vaccinated, while she has also volunteered in Ethiopia and Kenya. She is currently working with many charity organizations, such as Creative Coalition, Human Rights Campaign, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She is supporting rights of the LGBT community, as well as same sex marriage.

She has won many awards for her performances in movies, such as an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award for best supporting actress in “Les Miserables”, and a Golden Globe Award among others.
